Evening all,

Annual General Meeting, A good muster of members attended last Mondays AGM, where the business section flew through, with finances in good heart, and obviously members are more than happy with the course, as no one raised any negative issues regarding the Club or the Course. Recognition of service in the form of Life Memberships were bestowed on Helen Martin, Max Charmley and Ian McKenzie. Speaking to these members were Gail Borlase, John Mackay and Ken Barnett. All three new Life Members have been members of the Club since the 70s or 80s, and since joining have spent countless years on Committees, I congratulate Helen, Max and Ian on an outstanding effort A list of the 2020 committee is attached for your interest. (It may be headed 2019, but it is in fact the 2020 list)

The Match committee are working on the 2020 programme. We have some dates through from GHB but not all, and April is a difficult month to programme around as this year both Easter and Anzac weekends fall in that month. With Anzac Day on a Saturday, Monday becomes an observed day, so we have a 4 day and a 3 day weekend within two weeks of each other

Saturday 14th December: Christmas Cheer 12 noon Shot Gun Start, $20 Entry fee. The entry sheet has plenty of names on it, looks like a good field. Marcus & Glen are again running their Hagggle, food and drinks hole, so come along one and all and enjoy the day

The Fielding Interclub, Greenwood Cup and more news...

Fielding interclub; Thanks to the 21 members who joined the Fielding club members in Fielding last Saturday for our annual interclub. Laura Hurrell had an impressive 44 points to lead the Dannevirke scoring, followed by Craig Evans on 41 and Mike Matthews 40. Unfortunately our aggregate score fell well short of Fieldings 38.0 ours being 32.6 Great effort one and all.

Greenwood Cup Sat 16th Sun 17th Nov H B Golf Club: Attached are the tee times and which teams we are playing. I am unable to open and attached the individual draws as sent through from Andrew Jone (AJ) GHB administrator. With 2 matches 36 holes each day, there is plenty of golf to observe if you are heading to the Bay. The team look forward to your support. Our best wishes to the players selected to participate in this weekends team

Saturday 14th December; Christmas Cheer 12 noon Shot Gun Start. As is normal for this event, members are able to make up their own fours, or put their individual names up to be included in a four.

Get out there and enjoy our course, while it is in brilliant Spring like condition.

St Josephs Ambrose. Great day and great support, with 25 teams of 3, competing this year. This is the largest field ever for the school, The prize table of 10 Liter buckets filled by donations from school family's is a great idea, and this year, all players received a bucket. Thanks to our club members for your support. Maybe there was some potential golfers out there on Saturday

MCI & Associates Mixed Foursomes. We have two new names on the trophy this year, with Jo Ruwhiu and Syd Hikawai taking out the Gross prize. Nett winners were Marilyn Hall & Rod Henricksen, Stableford, Laura & Dave Hurrell, Runners up Gwen Murphy & yours truly.

Saturday 9th November; Interclub with Fielding at Fielding. For those who have responded to Mike, the mini bus will leave the Services & Citizens club carpark at 9am, (possibly one or two seats available) anyone else wishing to get a ride should also meet there and car pool. Tee off is at 11am.

Saturday / Sunday 16th & 17th November; Greenwood Cup Round 4-7 H B Golf Club

2019 / 2020 Twilight Golf. Looking for information that I can include in next weeks What's On

With the golfing year coming to a finish, the need for a weekly What's On, is becoming unnecessary,. It will continue until Greenwood and Christmas Cheer and the AGM are completed, then take a break until mid February.. The first What's On went out in 2012 to a hand full of members, and was produced as and when necessary. As numbers grew, so did the frequency, and now it is a Thursday night ritual, as is the reading by over 100 members and spouses.

Good luck if you are heading to Fielding on Saturday, or playing on our own immaculate course over the weekend. Last weekend it was difficult to tell that the Greens had only been cored for less than two weeks, and a huge thanks to Kierane and AG for mowing the greens for both tournaments. On Sunday afternoon we played through a group of 4 men, 2 from Wellington and two from Auckland. One Aucklander wanted to shift our course north, and commented he would gladly pay his $1700 sub to play on it. The four ingredients for golf are a course, ball, clubs, and the human. It never ceases to amaze me that, 90% of the blame for bad golf is on the first three, never the human. Get out there, enjoy the game, the walk and the company, and if you want to change something, we have an AGM in early December.

Saturday 2nd November; St Josephs School, 3 Ball Ambrose Tournament. 10.30am Tee Off The staff and parents of St Josephs, have made this annual tournament a success for their school. Please support them. Dannevirke Golf Club does well with sponsorship, today we ask you to support one of two Ambrose Tournaments run on our course for a local school.

Sunday 3rd November; MCI & Associates 36 Hole Mixed Foursomes; 8.30am Tee Off. Our thanks to MCI & Associates for their continued sponsorship of this Tournament, please support this event, remember there is also a men's foursomes field run in conjunction if lady partners are unavailable.

Saturday Interclub with Fielding at Fielding, details provided next week

Saturday 16th / Sunday 17th November, Greenwood Cup Rds 4-7 HB Golf Club. A reminder to the selectors that the team needs to be with AJ at H B Golf Association Wednesday 6th November.

Course update, Coring has been completed and a huge thanks to Kierane and Anthony for getting the course open for play Sunday and Monday of Labour weekend. Hopefully the evening rains of this week have assisted with washing the sand into the holes, and that surface recovery will be swift.

Ladies; The ladies spent this morning cleaning the kitchen and dining room, plus some clubhouse gardening. The cart shed has also been cleaned and tidied up. Robbie Benson asks that members please remove any old trundler and clubs that they own, so the trundler shed can be tidied and cleaned.

Obituary. Our flag is a half mast at present in memory of John Broad, a member in the 70-90s.

Big weekend coming up, starting tomorrow night when we play Malcolm's team for the bronze medal at the RWC. Saturday 10.30am tee off, Saturday night the final of the RWC and Sunday 8.30am Tee off.

Coring; We have good news and bad news. Coring was carried out on Tuesday, and if you have been to the course this week, you will see that the greens surrounds and tee blocks have all been cored. The bad news is the weather hasn't played ball at all for the staff, and thus the decision has been made to keep the course CLOSED for the week end. With the continued showers going through, the sand hasn't dried sufficiently for brushing, and regarding the surrounds and tees, again the cores haven't dried enough to go through a mower and break them down. If the weather clears, Kieran and AG will be out there over the weekend working to return the course to playing condition for next weekend when we host the St Josephs Ambrose Tournament on Saturday, and the MCI & Associates 36 mixed foursomes on the Sunday. So unfortunately no golf this weekend at Dannevirke, which is sad, but simply cannot be helped. (Any alteration to this situation will be advised tomorrow night)

What can we do; Pahiatua and Takapau Golf Clubs have men's day on Saturday at 12 noon, Onga Onga, Norsewood and Pongaroa hold Sunday Club days, Further afield I will leave it to yourselves to make a call and get yourselves a place on their course. The new format HB Golf Club may be an option, especially for those playing round 2 of the Greenwood Cup in November. If all else fails there is always the lawn mower, garden assistants, or getting the paint brush onto that job that just doesn't get done, but has been promised before Christmas 2019 ! (Tui ad) .

CAPE TURNAGAIN MIXED FOURSOMES to be held on Sunday 27th October 2019. Cup of tea 11.30am tee off twelve noon. $30 per couple with meal supplied after golf. All Welcome. Inquiries to Cookie 3743828 or email sgcook@inspire.net.nz . There is also a men's field option for those not wishing to, or not having a partner to play foursomes.

Management Committee Meeting Report 23/10/2019. Mike Matthews reported on the Inaugural Tararua Open, for the Motor Homes Ass'n on 14-16th February. This is a Tararua District Council sponsored event, playing Dannevirke, Pahiatua and Eketahuna over three days. This is a promote Tararua event, (more details to follow)

Defibrilator. Your Club has invested in this particular piece of equirpment, which I hope never gets used. Please take the time to have a look where it is stored, (yes outside in a cabinet) and make yourself aware of what you need to do in the event of it being required on the Course. The unit is in a locked cabinet, so first and foremost, you need to contact 111 STOP, advise the operator that you are at the Dannevirke Golf Club and that you need to access the defibrilator. They will access the code, and give it to you to open the cabinet. Then advise that you need an Ambulance. Option 2. Contact James Wailker via email 123waimarie@gmail.com, and he will give you the code, to place safely somewhere in your golf equipment so you can find it in an emergency. We ask that within your respective groups, Ie Seniors, Ladies, Thursday group, Friday boys, Club days etc make it know who has been trained to operate said unit, so that in the event of it being required, members know who yell out for. Do not be afraid to give it a go if needed, as the unit talks you through the process. A training night will take please in the near future (yet to be advised) to explain what the unit is and how to operate

Club Clothing. A reminder with Christmas fast approaching, that "Stitch Me" in Adelaide Road (turn right at the top of Victoria Ave, and the gate way is on the left before the top of the hill heading towards Cole Street) have stocks of club printed shirts jerseys and jackets. If you have a Dark Blue Jersey the you want the emblem put onto, that will do that as well. If its a well used jersey, showing signs of stress, the may refuse. This is a wondeful business they run from their home, and to call in and get a some club clothing may well suprise you what they do up there

Trophies: Do you have a tarnished Club Trophy sitting somewhere proudly at your home, well instead of playing golf Saturday, get it down, clean it up and either return it to the Club, or if it needs engraving with just your name for 2018, take it into the engraver opposite Property Brokers in High Street. with a printed label, your name and year. We can collect them from there.

Saturday 12th October; Original Greenwood Cup weekend , so nothing on this weeks calendar. remember we are now back to 11.30am Tee time on Saturdays. Keep matches flowing please. Our caterer Joy has had her holiday, so fresh food will be available again from this weekend

Sunday 13th October; Norsewood 27 Hole Stroke play Tournament. 8.30am tee off This is the last round of the Ruahine Rosebowl for 2019. Pigs might have to fly for Dannevirke to win it, but its a nice trophy made round to go around. Team, don't forget to take the Trophy to Norsewood Sunday. Good Luck

Greenwood Cup Results . Thanks to Brad Dippie, we have a summary of last weekend; (trainee Scribe!)

Saturday brought tough conditions with a warm but very windy day. First up we had Hastings and the score board of 9-1 showed a bit of a hiding however a lot of the matches came down to the last few holes. In the afternoon we had a slightly better showing with 6.5 - 3.5 against Maraenui and again a few close matches.

Sunday was a nicer day to play golf with no wind and softer greens from heavy rain over night. Napier were in fine form so we only managed to get two points in that match.

The team also had a side haggle with $10 in each and winner takes all for most birdies for the weekend, which was won by Pat Harrold having 7 birdies with 5 coming from his final match against Napier.

The team is looking forward to the next round at Hawks Bay where will have a full strength team back and a slightly easier draw.

Also huge thanks from the team to you Burtie for sponsoring our golf balls. Very much appreciated.

Greenkeeper Kieran. Kieran has some testing to do with the sprinklers on the greens and would like 40 or so 2 litre ice cream containers. He is partial to ice cream, but doesn't think he can eat 80 litres over the next couple of weeks. If you have some stashed in the pantry at home and wish to give them to Kieran, please leave them at the Greenkeeepers office door. If they are full please drop them at the office when the staff are there, so they can deal to the contents (Ice cream, cakes and biscuits all gratefully received)

Scribe is taking a week off to partake in the Turangi Leisure Lodge Golf week. Centennial Sunday, Taumaranui Monday, Reporoa Wednesday and Turangi Thursday. Looking forward to some sun, and evening re-hydration sessions.

What's On will resume Thursday 24th. Calendar says we are Coring on Monday 21st, and I have no reason to doubt that, The next edition of What's On will provide details of whats happening over Labour Week end, and a summary of how coring has gone. Request, Kieran or James, can you flick me an article for the 24th please? . Thanks

Saturday 5th October; Greenwood Cup Waipukurau. We have a tough draw this weekend with Hastings first up Saturday, Maraenui in the afternoon and Napier Sunday morning. Wishing all players a successful weekend

On the home front, Matches can still be played, but please refer to Stephen Paewais notes from last week regarding tees etc, as there is a 3pm wedding on course (behind the 9th tee) so please assist by giving the wedding party and guests some space. Catering; because of the wedding and school holidays, there is no fresh food available for the next two weeks

Bush Classic 2020. Below is the Poster for next years 36 hole Bush Classic, held the weekend of 11th & 12th January. Saturday Pahiatua and Sunday Eketahuna.

Saturday September 28th The CHB Open is on this Saturday on the Waipukurau Golf Course. Weather looks to be not too bad.An ideal opportunity for Greenwood Cup players to get in a practice round. (The course is closed for a prior booking next Friday 4th October). At this point only players from the CHB and Onga teams have entered. Any from the other teams to let me know by Friday please. Saturday October 5th . Please read the note from Stephen regarding the wedding on course on this day. In particular the 11am Tee Off despite information 2 weeks ago that we would be resuming 11.30am tee times effective this date ..

We have a private function at the Golf Club on 5 October. Rebekah Menzies is getting married with the ceremony taking place at the back of the 9th green. There will be a bit of activity around this area during the day as the family set up the area and the actual ceremony. Therefore tee off will be at 11 am and tees 1, 5 and 16 are to be used. No one is to start on 10 which means no one will finish on 9. Number 9 tee will be closed at 1.30 pm. The upstairs lounge will be closed from Friday so the family can decorate the lounge and will be available again on Sunday. There’ll be approximately 100 guests so the car park will be pretty full.

With the Greenwood Cup starting on 5 October I anticipate a smaller Saturday field and so there’ll be minimum disruption for members. We have about 6 of these functions at the Golf Club annually and while I appreciate there is some inconvenience, the functions generate quite a bit of extra income for the Golf Club and I thank members for their understanding and co operation. The Greenwood Cup and other news from the club...

Saturday 21st September Wiffin Cup Round 3 matches 11am Card Draw / Tee off (11.30 tee off resuming Saturday 5th October)

Saturday 5th Sun 6th October: Greenwood Cup Round 1-3 at Waipukurau. Our team will be announced next Thursday in What's On. Thanks to Richie Gray & Brad Dippie, for their work contacting all the players and finalising the team. I believe Brads the phone man, because Richie and cell phones have a rockie relationship. Don't forget the CHB Open 27 Hole Tournament Saturday September 28th Tee Off 8.30 if you want a practice round

Ladies; On Monday the HBPB women’s Interzone was played at Waipukurau between Southern, Central and Northern. It has been played since 1956. Northern have won this competition more times than any other team and were on a winning streak of 7 years. Not this year however as us Southern girls won this convincingly and included in the team of 16 the players from our club were Laura Hurrell, Di Adams, Marg Treacy and myself. Joy Charmley was first reserve but not needed. Gwen Murphy is the Southern Zone Rep and chose a top team this year.
We have our club champs finalists with myself vs Sue Burlace in the seniors, Joy Charmley vs Marg Treacy in the intermediates and Bernice Roche vs Cheryl Benson in the juniors.
The course is looking awesome at present and is a credit to our greenkeepers and volunteers. Thanks guys. Margaret

Management Committee: From last nights meeting, For anyone who pens a report for the Annual General Meeting, please start getting these together, as we need to get them to Gail by end of October for printing and posting. Carts: Graham Walker has taken one of our carts to Palmerston North where it will be fitted with new Lithium Batteries. Upgrading to these batteries is equivalent to reconditioning a car motor, so the balance of the carts will be upgraded when their batteries fail. The funding committee has been putting in applications for a cart replacement, so if successful, a new cart will appear at the Club. Roger Ransom, spoke on the work being carried out at the road entrance. The timber railings are to be replaced with rock cages, then filled with river rocks, as a symbol of the Tamaki River that weaves its way through the Club property, and is a provider of large quantities of metal. Signage and a symbol of Golf will be included , and visible from the main road. The defibrillator has arrived, but unfortunately with the incorrect cabinet. Once corrected and installed a training / information night will be held so that members are aware how to access and use the device, if circumstances ever arrive. Also discussed the possibility of notifying locals or Ruahine School, so they know where to get a device in an emergency. Further details will be provided in future editions of What's On

Dannevirke Golf Club.... So many opportunities to play golf.

Tomorrow the HB Eagles host and run their annual Halberg Tournament at Napier Golf Club, followed by dinner and the CEO of Halberg speaking. With the introduction of Lady Eagles this year, the Tournament has also been opened to a mixed field for the first time, and thus we have a full field. The past couple of year, each Tournament has presented around $15,000 to the Halberg Trust, so fingers crossed, tomorrow should produce a similar result.

Kitt, Kerr Hape Simpson Foursomes. Youth prevailed over experience last weekend with Richie Gray & Zane Gregory taking out the Kitt Trophy with a 66 Nett, followed by David & Laura Hurrell (Kerr) Phil Wilson & Bung Lilo (Hape) and Amrit Presda & Tim Small (Simpson) In all 15 pairs participated on a very nice but cool day.

Friday 13th September. Cape Turnagain, Stockies & Cockies Tournament. 11am Cuppa 11.30 tee off. On a good day, nothing beats a round at the Cape. Head on out there, you will be made most welcome. For those playing at home Friday a note from Clubhouse manager Stephen Paewai "On Friday 13 September the Golf Club has been hired by the Tararua Alliance for a social event. A small group will be there during the day preparing a hangi meal and they will be using the kitchen and upstairs lounge from 5 pm till 9 pm. Can the Friday golfers please use the back lounge off the dining room."

Saturday 14th September: 11am Card draw. Catch up day for Wiffin Cup and Sattrup & Brannigan Matches. Note 11am Start times will continue until daylight saving, so October 5th will be the first day we revert to an 11.30am Tee Off.

Rosebowl Competition 2019. This has still to be completed as Norsewood have not hosted their 27 hole tournament as yet. I believe Sunday 13th October is their latest tentative date. TBC

Takapau 30 Hole Strokeplay Tournament, Great to see a large turnout of Dannevirke players at Takapau. I believe 16 of us. Despite what you may have heard, I feel Takapau is back on track, and their course is in tidy condition, with al ot of spraying happening around the creek, fairways and greens all in good order. Some members who walked away from their Club a couple of years ago have returned, so here's hoping for a bright future for Takapau. Brad Dippie, Peter Gregory, Billy Te Ture and myself were mentioned in the trophy list, apologies if I missed some. I may have been put off by the fact Billy T was a Junior. Rosebowl was not good for us, finishing 5th and gaining one point.

Saturday 7th September 11am Tee Off Kitt Kerr Hape Simpson Foursomes. This competition was given some air time on Dannevirke radio last week by Pat Walshe, and was informed by a couple of our historians as to who they all were. Apparently at one time there were only three Trophies, but the late Bob Simpson donated the fourth as he and his partner could never make the top three. As has been mentioned before, it is the only men's foursomes competition on our calendar so come on out and join in.

Greenwood Cup, This years competition is coming up in early October, with rounds 1-3 being played at Waipukurau. Note the date change for anyone wanting to go and watch. The first weekend is October 5th and 6th (a change from the club programme)

Fielding Interclub. One of longest running inter clubs is coming up on Saturday 9th November. Keep this day free and join the club for a visit to Fielding

Hopefully we don't receive all the rain that is predicted so we can get a game in on Saturday. You can record the All Blacks v Tonga game being played in Hamilton Saturday afternoon, and watch it when you get home.

The match committee will assist with pairing. The format is one ball playing alternate shots. Add the two handicaps, and divide by two for an end of round nett. Top four netts take out the four trophies listed above.

Good afternoon to you all.

I write to inform the golfing fraternity of Hawkes Bay of an important appointment for the HB Golf Association that comes into place on Monday.

Many of you will be aware that in recent times we advertised for an Administrative Manager for the Association.

After advertising and interviewing we are pleased to announce that Andrew Jones (otherwise known as AJ) will start in the role as of this coming Monday 26th August 2019.

AJ’s role will be part time (approximately 20 hours per week) but there is flexibility within the hours - some weeks will demand more, some weeks less but the role is based on 20 hours per week.

AJ’s background to the job started with the Remuera GC in Auckland where after working with the Clubs Administrator for 5 years, he was offered the role on his own which he did for another 4 years. In 2015 he had the opportunity to start a NZPGA Apprenticeship, which enabled him to broaden his experience and expertise within the golf industry. In June 2017 (halfway through the apprenticeship) he was offered the opportunity to become the assistant professional at the Hastings Golf Club under Brett Allan, while completing his PGA apprenticeship. He completed the PGA training in 2018, his training covering golf coaching, game development, small business and management. AJ will continue to work in the Hastings pro shop part time.

So as you can see, AJ has an understanding of most things golf and after some initial help and guidance from the board, we anticipate AJ making the role his own before too long. I will be available to help as/if he needs it and Jack Sanders will continue with his role; looking after the finances so that AJ can concentrate on the golf.

Handicap Change: Yes handicaps changed yesterday, and with Stephen away he asked me to print the sheets. I can and I will, but they may not be there until Saturday morning.

Management Committee Meeting; held Wednesday 21st August. Club in good heart currently, competitions are moving along well, the new weekend catering is popular with the members, particularly the hot food. Subscriptions, there are a few members in arrears which is disappointing. If you have overlooked paying your subscription, please deal to it ASAP, as the financial year for the club end 30th September. The easiest way to pay your Sub is to commence payments in October, either $10 weekly or $43.50 monthly. When the accounts come out in March, you will be 6 months in advance, and the remaining balance will be cleared by September. Any members unsure of their balance please contact Miranda at dannevirkegolf@xtra.co.nz

Saturday 7th September. Kitt, Kerr, Hape Simpson Foursomes. Time to start planning who you wish to play with in this competition. To our newer members, speak to the office starter over the next week or two, and they will put you in contact with other players looking for a partner. This is the one and only day in a year the men play foursomes, so lets do it.

Eagles Visit, Last weekend I joined Shaun Morgans, Gavin Cook, Max Charmley & Stephen Prenter for a trip to Mahia. We went onto Gisbourne and played Poverty Bay Saturday, then combined with the Mahia members and a handful of Poverty Bay Eagles plus a large contingent of HB Eagles members for a round at Mahia on Sunday. Great golfing conditions, and for those looking for a new experience, I recommend the 9 hole Mahia Links Course. Rewarding for the straight hitters and punishing for the errant, greens are in very good order and the layout is challenging. Highly recommend. Stephen is obviously getting far to much practice now he is retired, taking out top spot at Poverty Bay, and claiming overall winner over two days, although that was not actually a competition.

What's on at the Dannevirke Golf Club this week?

SHB 27 Hole Strokeplay Tournament. I can report on a very Tournament last Saturday. Despite the wind and rain Friday and right through the night, the day dawned calm yet cool, and in the afternoon, clear blue sky's. A field of 42 men , 20 senior and 22 junior plus 3 ladies. SHB Champion for 2019 is Brad Truesdale. Result sheets are at the Club and I didn't have time today to retrieve them, so apologies about the lack of results. Mike Matthews asked that I acknowledge Kieran and Billy T for mowing the greens, and finishing in time for Billy to play. To Barbara, and Nola the lunch and evening meal cooks, the members who arrived early and checked all the bunkers, and his scoring assistants Willie Veitch and Timmy Bell. Also Tony Peeti and his helpers for running raffles upstairs. Lastly our sponsor Adam Webster from Lion, and of course Mike himself who had everything under control when I contacted him Thursday with an old check list of actions required. Good work Mike .

Saturday 10th August. Card draw 11am Sattrup & Brannigan matches to be continued please, along with any first round Wiffin Cup matches that haven't been played yet.

Saturday 17th August: Lui Paewai Trophy. A spectacular trophy to have your name on. Best Stableford on the day. Defending Champion Zane Gregory. In racehorse terms, the track didn't suit him last Saturday. May have needed the run. A repeat of his 41 points from last year is there somewhere.

Pacific Golfer July 2019 Edition: Interesting articles in this magazine with copies just inside the door at the Club house. One on Royal Wellington being involved in a video on improving air quality. They are planting out of the way areas in native grasses rather than mowing. The other article of interest was the answer from Dave Mangin GM of Championship and Golf Operations, answering a queston on placing.

Questions "The preferred lie or placing is for the condition of the course, so how can placing on your own mowed fairway be correct" "If the condition of the course is such that a placing is needed, surely 15cm place on all closely mowed fairways" would be the correct rule ! Answer from Dave, The Local rule should read. "When a players ball lies in a part of the general area cut to fairway height or less the player may take free relief once by placing the original ball or another ball in and playing it from the relief area" Specify the size of the area, such as one club length, one scorecard length or 15cm.

In essence what Dave is debating is, If you want to protect your fairways, and have placing, then the placing should be on the surface you are playing, not the hole you are playing. Interesting!!

Take a copy of the magazine home, have a read then return it to the table for someone else. We get about 10 or do copies each month. Always a good read.

Saturday 3rd August; SHB 27 Hole Strokeplay Tournament. (Ruahine Rosebowl) 8am Cuppa, 8.30am Tee Off $30 Entry fee includes, competition, twos and lunch. Please bring a plate for the shared tea, which is a vote of thanks to our country clubs for the hospitality we receive when visiting their Tournaments. Adam Webster is on board again this year with his Lion Sponsorship, so please take the time to thank Adam for his support of our Tournament.

Saturday 17th August; Lui Paewai Trophy. Best Stableford on the day from all players. A spectacular trophy, well worth getting your name on this one.

Club News:

Greenkeeper; A name well known to many in the golfing circles. A G (Anthony) Little is coming on board as an assistant to Kieran. Anthony has vast experience, and will assist Kieran complete his apprenticeship, as well as pass on his years of experience. Welcome AG to our staff.

Trundler Shed: With the new door on the shed comes a new lock. It appears some members are having a degree of difficulty with the lock but Peter Greatbatch asked me to convey this message. The lock is electronic, so when the numbers are entered the barrels have to spin around to allow the door to open. After entering the numbers, watch the lock until the green light goes out, Now the door will open. If you try while the light is on, it won't open. Patience people!

Ladies; Last Wed 24th July we held a very successful “Toast to Life Members” where past and present lady members were invited to a luncheon at the clubhouse. We also helped Edith Martin celebrate her 95th birthday with cake, flowers and punch. This event was organised superbly by Jad Suttor and Gail Borlase and all current lady golfers provided the lunch and decorated the dining area. Twin sets and pearls in evidence, along with waitresses attired appropriately and a sing along on the piano accompanied by Elaine the Piano Lady dressed as Elton all made for a great affair.

We have our last Pennants on Monday but we are not in the running for top prize this year. We have started our Club Championships Rounds with 6 Seniors, 8 Intermediates and 4 Juniors Qualifying.

Porangahau are looking for some lady players to play with their men or with their own partner on Sunday 4th August in a mixed Foursomes of anyone is interested ring Marilyn Forrest.

Please support our 27 Hole Tournament this Saturday, there is no fear of a frost, as a breeze is forcast. Well maybe more than a breeze. We will be hosting our other Rosebowl Clubs, Pongaroa, Cape Turnagain, Norsewood and Takapau, plus Michael has a couple of out of town entries. Please be early, or phone the Club on 374 8248, if you are running late so the field can be finalised and on the course at 8.30am. Late entries may be teeing off number 7.

A reminder to members the lounge has been hired for a birthday on Saturday 20 July. Therefore the bar will close at 5.30 pm to allow the Cordell’s to set up the room for their function. Last week we had Emily Mott’s 40th birthday which went very well, thanks to everyone for cooperating and supporting these events which provides extra income for the Golf Club. The next function is on Saturday 5 October, Rebekah Menzies wedding Regards Stephen.

Saturday 3rd August. 27 Hole SHB Strokeplay Tournament (Ruahine Rosebowl Round 3)

This is the major men's Tournament on our calendar, so please keep this day free, and join us. As has become tradition over the past couple of years, please bring a plate for a shared dinner. Our way of thanking our Country Clubs for the way they host us at their Tournaments.

Weekend Catering: Joy Raffaelli (High School Caterer) plus the cater for our recent Sisters Club Weekend, is bringing out sandwiches and burgers on Saturday and Sunday. The food will be in the unmanned shop, and is being sold on an honesty basis. Joy is keen to pursue opportunities with the Club so please support her.

Just spent two weeks on a Vietnam & Thailand Golf Tour hosted by Andrew Henare NZPGA Golf Professional at Napier Golf Club. The tour was a combination of sight seeing, culture and six rounds of golf, three in each country. The courses were spectacular. In Vietnam ( Hoi An) out from Danang, we played Montgomery Links, Ba Na Hills and Danang Golf Club, and in Thailand south of Bangkok, we played Banyan Golf Club, Black Mountain and Alpine Golf Club. Spectacular but difficult to play was Ba Na Hills in Vietnam, this course is set up with lights for night golf In Thailand Black Mountain had the most impressive stone work around all their water, which was either across or beside every hole, and Alpine Golf Club was a little easier to play. Andrew intends to take this tour annually, with advertising for next years trip starting shortly. We had 13 golfers, I believe Andrew would like to have a party of 16 golfers. We had a travel guide in each country that helped us navigate the markets, food stalls and night life. A great trip that I would recommend if these two countries are on your bucket list, and very inexpensive.

Saturday 22nd June 11am Card Draw, Sattrup & Brannigan early matches. A reminder that the early matches are the 7 matches required to be played to make the final 16. These were listed in last weeks What's On, so please try and get these played before Saturday 6th July

Sunday 23rd June. POSTPONEMENT Norsewood Golf Club 27 hole Rosebowl Tournament. The Norsewood Club have advised they have postponed their Tournament until early spring because of on course issues. New date to be advised in due course. Don't forget our own 27 Hole Tournament is set down for Saturday August 3rd.

Greenwood Cup; An update on our unfortunate situation. As was mentioned a week or two back, the Greenwood Cup has been rescheduled because date clashes which are out of our control. Second to that, the new dates of Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October presented us with another issue. That being the Club is booked for a wedding on Saturday 5th. The wedding is taking place on the course late afternoon, which could have been accommodated had it been a Club day, but not with 80 players on the Course. Presenting our dilemma to GHB Match Committee, the decision has been made to swap the first three round with the 2020 hosts Waipukurau. Please accept that Club hireage is part of our business, and the booking would not have been made on a Greenwood weekend, except when that date changes as is the case this year.

One other matter regarding Greenwood, Takapau Golf Club are challenging the new Central Hawkes Bay Team to the 8th position. Remember Waipukurau ceased after last years Greenwood to replaced by CHB, with players drawn from Waipukurau, Waipawa and Porongahau. Challenge date is Sunday July 28th at HB Golf Club.

Wiffin Cup. I beleive we finished with about 30 qualifying, so Timmy Bell has produced the draw. No concerns though, the first round of Match play is not until Saturday 27th July.

Coronation Cup final results and other news

Evening all,

Coronation Cup Finals. ( Supplied by Wayne Mudgeway)

The 2019 Coronation Cup finals were played at OngaOnga last Saturday and Sunday.The 4 teams that won through to the final were Te Pohue from Zone 1, Napier from Zone 2, Porongahau from Zone 3 and Pongaroa in Zone 4. Saturday weather was rather cold, windy and wet at times, but Sunday was a brilliant day weather wise. The hosting club OngaOnga did an outstanding job which made the weekend flow very well so special thanks to John Swinburne and his team for looking after everybody.

After the Saturday play it was very even, with maybe Te Pohue holding a slight advantage in games but come Sunday, Napier took full advantage of the improved conditions, being unbeaten with 8 wins and 4 halves across the 12 players.

Napier took out the cup with 6 points from 3 wins, while the other three teams went turnabout, beating each other, all having 1 win each, so 2 points each.

Congratulations to Napier GC and the players involved for the win – unbeaten on the last day speaks for itself, a great achievement. Robin Daley, a Golf HB and Golf NZ life member presented the trophy to Gerry Gray, the Napier captain.

Finally, thanks to Russell Burns who looked after the day for Golf HB and again to John and OngaOnga for the presentation of the course and the catering.

We now look forward to 2020.

Management Committee. It is with regret that our Committee has received the resignation of our Green Keeper Brian Gear. Brian has decided to move to Australia (Kalgoolie) Wishing you all the best for your new adventure. An appropriate farewell will be advertised in the near future. We also have Maria Adams retiring from here catering and Shop / Camping etc duties. Both matters are before the management Committee Meeting Monday 17th June

With 116mm rain over the last 24 hours,(my rain gauge) I can assure you the summer run will be gone now for a while. We will see how it all soaks in in the new day or so.

The latest results and news on Dannevirke golf

Sisters Club. from Stephen

Another successful tournament was held at Queens Birthday weekend with 70 plus players competing on Sunday. Thanks to all those that played or helped in some way during the 3 days our Sister Club visitors were in Dannevirke. The results were like the weather, abysmal! Patea were first with an average 32.6 followed by Weedons 32.5, Rarangi 31.9 and Dannevirke 31.4. Brooke Hale from Rarangi shot a 66 on Sunday to win the Alex Burgen Memorial Cup. For Dannevirke Laura Hurrell with 41 points was the top Dannevirke golfer on a count back from Chris Peck followed by daylight!

Next year it’s off to Blenhiem and hopefully some of the members new to this tournament might consider turning out again. In 2021 Patea will host the 50th playing of the event and it was agreed by the Club Captains that we will participate in that tournament. Everyone involved would agree there’s great camaraderie between all involved with a lot of banter and laughter happening on the course and in the Clubhouse.

Once again a huge thanks to everyone who supported the tournament.

Eagles Golfing Society of HB. On Tuesday last a contingent of Eagles came to Dannevirke to play with the Tuesday Seniors. On a cool but otherwise pleasant day, there was a field of about 40 players. As mentioned last week, after golf Robin Daily was presented with Honorary Membership to the Eagles Golfing Society, Robin joins the two other Honorary Members Sir Brian Lochore and Julian Robertson. Kevin Pike from Waipukurau (born Dannevirke ) provided the history of RB, Also to speak were Brian Doyle, John Dorreen and Kim Southerden. Congratulation RB

After last weekend and Tuesday I'm a bit gun shy on weather conditions, so hopefully Saturday will dawn a pleasant day, and we can all head out to the course for a round of golf.

What's on this weekend at the Dannevirke Golf Club?

Pennants Final, Our Handicap Division 5 team made the finals this year in their first year competing, but unfortunately fell to Napier 6 / 3 last Sunday. Attached are the Results from last Sunday.Interesting for the ten finals, the top seed took out five finals and second seed the remaining five .

Saturday 1st June / Sunday 2nd June. As you are all aware, we host the 48th Annual Sisters Club Tournament this weekend. The field size for Saturday is around 70. made up from Patea 18, Weedons 18, Rarangi 13 and ourselves 21, plus a few more playing Sunday being the Tournament Day. Great to have both Johnny and Frank Edwards playing Sunday. Frank travelled for many years to this Tournament, so good to have him in the field. Tee off 10.30am using tees 1,2,5,10,11,13,and 16. . The weekend programme commences with a Meet & Greet from 6pm onward s at the Merrylees Hotel tomorrow night. Saturday is practice day, followed by a meal at the Clubhouse, and a free night. Sunday again golf at 10.30am, fines session and meal at the Clubhouse, and then back to the Merrylees to dance the night away, with a band put on by the Hotel. It was our intention to put the weekend draws in tonight's What's On, but Stephen couldn't get his attachment email to leave his sent box, Draws for both days will be at the Merrylees tomorrow night

Tuesday June 4th . On Tuesday the Golf H B Eagles are coming to visit and play with our Seniors. Following Golf a presentation is to be made to R B Dailey, making him an Honorary Member of the H B Eagles Golfing Society. Anyone wishing to be at the Clubhouse for the Presentation, should be there before 2pm (approx) .

The Latest news from the Club

Evening all,

Coronation Cup. Our team competed very well at Pongaroa last weekend, but came up short against the local team, finishing in second place. Pongarora turned on a reasonably fine but cool and windy at times weekend, with their normal very high standard of hospitality. My congratulations to Alan Small, for the condition of their greens. I don't beleive in the 30 odd years I've been playing Pongaroa, I have ever seen their greens in such great condition. They are a challenge to chip onto if your don't play a high ball, but the putting surface was a credit to Alan. At the end of play Pongaroa were declared the winners with 6 points, beating all three competing Clubs. We were in second place with four points from two wins.We lost to Pongaora 7 / 5, and beat Cape Turnagain 8 / 4, and Norsewood 8 1/2 to 3 1/2. Bill Newland and his local knowledge took out our Mackie Cup having three wins, and Doug Stewart was unbeaten as well with two wins and a half. Many more games went right to the 18th, so we were very competitive. Sunday 26th May Pennants Final Our Handicap 5 team made the finals and play Napier, at HB Golf, teeing of the 10th tee at 9am. The finals team is Vaughan Hales, Bill Newland Thomas Kugeleign, Gavin Henricksen, Ray Ward and J B Holm

June 1st - 2nd . Sisters Club at Dannevirke. Next Friday evening near on 50 players from Weedons, Rarangi and Patea will descend on Dannevirke for the annual tournament. Friday has a meet and greet at the Merrylees Hotel., with play commencing at 10.30 (Shot gun start) both Saturday and Sunday. Additional details have been provided previously, but if any other members want to be included in the draw, please contact Stephen Paewai. We have a need please for some trundlers for the weekend. If you have a spare trundler or two, please tie a name label on, and leave at or in the trundler shed this weekend or next week. We have a need for about 30 trundlers.

Last night Management Committee Meeting Meeting. Its good to see this years Committee continuing with a few upgrades around the club. Vaughan Hales, is dealing with the tee and sponsor signs, Peter Greatbatch is coordinating maintenance projects on the rental house, and club room changing rooms, and Roger Ransom, is working on an upgrade to the road entrance.. Through What's On we will provide drawings of the entrance, but for those who travel to Palmerston, he is looking at the rock cages like outside the engineering workshop at the bottom of the Saddle Road, Ashhurst side

Our Caterer Maria Adams have given notice that she wishes to retire, and is finishing mid June. Stephen Paewai has put together an overview of Maria's week, (attached), we ask that members have a read through, and have a chat to anyone you may think would like to take on this role. Stephen Paewai as Clubhouse Manager, is happy to have a chat with anyone interested. One lady had shown interest, but the has decided not to proceed. There is potential there for someone wanting to use their catering skills for private functions.

Wedding

On Saturday 11 May the Club has been hired out to Ray and Doreen Black for their son’s wedding. Therefore the upstairs lounge will not be available on Friday and Saturday.

Sisters Club

A list is up outside the men’s lockers for those either interested in playing or helping at the Sisters Club event on the 1st and 2nd of June. We’re expecting close to 60 visitors so any help would be appreciated. Dannevirke have won the last 2 events so given home advantage we would like to get a large number of players. With one card in five being dropped from the scoring the larger the team the bigger the advantage.

A few items to cover this week, so while I have the time here is this weeks What's On

Pennants , Wayne Mudgeway sent through a very good summary after 4 rounds, with one round to go on Sunday 12th May. You can all see where your team is and what your chances are of making the finals, if you haven't already.

Round 4 of pennants was held on Sunday and like the third day in a Golf Major, it was “moving day”. After the days results, some teams are now already into the finals and some teams are definitely not.

However, there are some amazingly close contests going on that will only establish the finalists once the results are in after round 5.

Thank you to those responsible for getting the results in this week, I hardly had to chase at all and just me being busy at work has held me up getting them out until now.

In Championship 1 Napier and Hastings top the table but Maraenui, OngaOnga and Hawkes Bay can make it with big wins in the last week.

In Championship 3; well who would know? – Hawkes Bay (25.5 games won), Hastings (25.5 also) and Napier( 24) all have 6 points so it is down to the wire. Hastings play Napier and Hawkes Bay play Dannevirke who could also make it if they happened to have a big win over Hawkes Bay.

In Handicap 1 Te Pohue and Wairoa lead the way with 6 points but both play teams on 4 points but can make it by winning and increasing the number of games won. Very close there.

In Handicap 3 Karamu are home, but 4 teams are in contention for the other finalist spot.

In Handicap 4 Maraenui are into the finals and whoever wins between Wairoa and Dannevirke will meet them in the final.

In Handicap 5 Dannevirke and Napier have made the finals with a week to go.

As per normal, these are the results as I have calculated – if anyone sees anything different, please give me a call.

In round 5 single divisions are being played at Dannevirke (C1) ,Takapau (H2) and Hawkes Bay (H5) so presume about an 11.00am tee off.

Hastings are hosting C2 & H4 and a draw has been made up and I believe most clubs have received direct from Hastings (however, I will send it again) and C3, H1 and H3 are all being held at Maraenui. When Phil and the team at Maraenui get a draw sorted I will send it out as well.

So a summary of results is attached, along with the draw for the fifth and final round.

Sister Clubs :

The Dannevirke Golf Club is hosting this year’s Sisters Club event. On Saturday 1 June and Sunday 2 June we will be hosting between 50 and 60 visitors from the Patea, Rarangi and Weedons Golf Clubs. The Dannevirke Golf Club initiated this event in 1972 meaning almost 50 years of involvement, quite some record. Therefore we are asking members to give their full support to this event. This support can take many forms, we need players, we’re looking at an unprecedented 3 peat, having won the last 2 events! As with any tournament we require help with morning tea, scoring and the bar. We’re also looking for donations of a bottle of wine or a bottle of spirits for approaches and the raffle. If you can help in anyway please contact Stephen Paewai, Bryan Burt or Peter Greatbatch.

Coronation Cup; The match committee met tonight and has finalised the Coronation Cup team to play at Pongaroa on Sat / Sun 18th / 19th May. As is tradition the tteam will we read out at the cape turnagain Tournament on Sunday, and will be printed next Thursday

Sunday 5th May; Cape Turnagain 27 Hole Strokeplay Tournament. Round 2 Ruahine Rosebowl 8am cup of tea, 8.30am Tee Off

Saturday 11th May; Club Championship Finals. Looking at the result sheets, it looks like we are ready to go. Any non completed matches will hopefully be cleared up this weekend. A draw will be published next Thursday

Saturday 27th April. Championship and Plate Semi Finals. Most groups are up todate, with three games being played today Anzac day. BTruesdale, beating G Vigers, V hales beating S Poole, and in the plate competition JB Holm beat P Greatbatch. Remember Finals weekend is set for may 11th, so please keep in contact with your opponents and get these games played.

Sunday 5th May Cape Turnagain 27 Hole Strokeplay Tournament (Round 2 Ruahine Rosebowl) 8.30 tee off

Today we had a good field tee off just after noon, competing for the Waitahora Cup plus men v ladies. Waitahora Cup was taken out by Mike Matthews, and the men won the challenge with the ladies. Four ladies competed, and scored very well, but the shear numbers assisted the men.

Management Committee, from the last Meeting I can inform the Club that we have received $20,000 from Pub Charity for the replacement of our Roughs mower. Brian & Kieran have trialled a couple of units, so we should see the new mower out there shortly. The ladies had completed two rounds of pennants with a 4.5 to 3.5 win over Hastings and a 6 to 2 win over Combined.

Maria Adams: Maria has made it known to members of the Committee that she wishes to retire from her current position. She has an ankle injury that requires attention, plus her grand daughters are getting jobs now and are unable to assist her on large day. Currently Maria is there 4 days a week Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, between 11am and finishes up between 2 and 3 pm. Maria is great with our campers, as she speaks more than one language, so is great welcoming person for our international guests. If we have anyone out there who would be interested in taking on this role, or asking questions regarding the role, please contact either Stephen Paewai or Tony Peeti.

There is plenty going on at the Dannevirke Golf Club

It has been a busy few days at the Golf Club, and for members First up last weekend was the second round of Club Championship Match Play, and the first round of Plate play. Both competitions have sheets up in the men's changing rooms, so please have a look, and get any outstanding matches played as soon as possible. We have a bit of breather space, with Easter and Anzac Day before the next round on April 27th, so there is no reason why these matches can't be played.

Sunday also saw the car park fill up with camper vans as golfers arrived to play Round 1 of the Central and Southern HB Seniors 4 course tournament. Round 1 was on Monday at Dannevirke with 72 players (second hand information) Monday night the vans moved north for round 2. The other 3 participating courses being Takapau, Waipukurau and Waipawa.

Coring; Coring commenced Tuesday, after the Seniors event. Kieran ran coring this time round as part of his apprenticeship course. From all accounts the job was almost complete by Tuesday night with coring finished and picked up, sand spread and brushed. Max informs me that now the club owns a tractor trailer, and with his and James Walkers tractors, on the course, the sand is kept up to the spreader, which greatly increases the speed of the operation. Our thanks to these two gentlemen for the use of their machinery, and time, and to all other members who helped in the process. I have attached some photos of the job being done. The corer and pick up machine are hired, the sand spreader two JD tractors and one trailer belong to the club.

Ladies day Wednesday. With the Course closed for coring, the ladies headed away on a mystery bus trip. They were seen gathering at the rural bus car park at 8am. The rest is unknown

Saturday 30th Card draw 11.30am (If there is any reason the Course will not be open by Saturday I will send a note out tomorrow night)

Sunday 14th April Pike Cup at Waipukurau. we hosted this event last year, and it is one of the largest tournament hosted by GHB. We are looking for 12 players (possibly 18) to represent us at this event. It is a Strokeplay event for men 50 years and over. Competition is for the best Gross team (5 best scores count) and Best Nett. Individual Best Gross and Best Nett. Can willing players either reply to this email, or give your names to the starters on Saturday. The Tournament is limited to 24 teams,

A plea to the other sections of our Club, I beleive your have emails going around yourselves for information results etc. Please if you feel they are applicable, send them to me and I will copy and past them into this weekly email. The better informed our members are, the bigger our fields appear to be. With What's On going onto our Club facebook page every friday, it is heartening to hear just who is looking at it. As the saying goes 'use it or lose it" .

Twilight: Due to Farmlands Golf on this Friday and with getting dark fast, (TP, Chalky, and Baz) have decided that Twilight has come to an end for this year. Next season, we will be returning to Thursday nights

Fridays have been ok, but we feel Thursdays are better. Thanks to the starters and results person, barstaff and Emily Mott for her BBQ cooking. Another successful twilight season. See you next summer

Lounge: You may notice a few grey chairs starting to appear upstairs. Thanks to Kevin Jameson who has offered and is recovering them for us. The Club purchased the cloth, and Kevin is taking a few home at the time to recover them.

4 Course Classic: The annual seniors tournament kicks off at Dannevirke on Monday 25th, so there will be plenty of camper vans around the car park over the weekend. Good luck to our members involved in this event.

Coring: Tuesday March 26th Please be aware the course is closed on Tuesday until further notice, while coring is completed. Brian & Kieran, will have signage out advising the course is closed, and we request members respect their instructions. It is normal for the Course to reopen Friday, but I will leave it to either staff or the greens committee to advise me if they open early, whereby I will send a What's On Special advising as such.

News from Gail ,

Last week the ladies catered for 49 members of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association, they were on their annual “golf safari”, which started in Palmerston North, then on to Feilding, Dannevirke, Waipukurau, Hastings, Napier and Maraenui. Approximately 30 vans took up space in our carpark and camp sites. A great fundraiser for the ladies, with green fees, camp sites, cart hireage and bar takings also adding to quite a profitable evening for our club. We received many favourable comments on our course and the dinner which the ladies provided.

The draw for the 5 divisions of the Club Champs has been completed and is on the noticeboard in the locker room. It is assumed everyone is aware Club Champs start this Saturday and the listed tee times is based on that assumption. All divisions except the Junior A (18 – 21) and Junior B (22+) divisions are over subscribed and will require a couple of preliminary games. If you can’t play on Saturday,

Whats on at the club this week?

Plenty of news tonight, so put your glasses on an have a read.

The Kaitoki Marae hosted the annual Marae golf tournament on Saturday 23 February and despite the forecast of wind and rain Tawhirimatea smiled upon us and the weather was fine with little or no wind meaning ideal conditions for golf and the scores reflected the conditions. 76 players made up 4 divisions, this being the best turnout for many years. The Dave Barber trophy was won by Richard Howearth with 44 points and he becomes the only two time winner in the 22 years the tournament has been running. The senior division was won by Billy Te Ture with a nett 66, the intermediate winner was Jim Bob Holm with a nett 65 and the womens division was won by Charlie Timu with 47 points. The inter marae trophy was won by the Matahi o te Tau Marae, of Te Araroa, this team was led by Henry Ruwhiu and included Mike Wall, Monette Ellmers, Jo Ruwhiu, Myra White and Debbie Ruwhiu.

My thanks go to the Ngati Pakapaka whanau who fed us during the day, the Dannevirke Golf Club members who supported the tournament in a variety of roles, the sponsors who continue to give generously to support the marae, all the golfers who turned up to play and in particular those that travelled to support our tournament.

Sunday March 3rd GHB Pennants. Round 1 An update from a couple of weeks ago. Seeing a vacancy in Handicap Division 5, Stephen Paewai talked to the Tuesday seniors about putting in a team, which was welcomed by GHB. Hawkes Bay Golf Club also rallied and have put an extra team in to fill the gap in Handicap Division 3, so they no longer have a bye in that grade. It is great to see Dannevirke having 6 teams in a competition with 8 grades. Well done, particularly when we see Waipukurau reduced to just one team this year. Attached tonight are 1 the full draw for week one, 2, the revised draw for handicap 3 and 5 with the extra teams, plus the Dannevirke High School Fundraiser Tournament. Good luck to all teams on Sunday.

Saturday 16th March Dannevirke High School Golf Tournament. (Flyer attached) which includes First Hole in One On Number 9 = $10,000 Sponsored by Aon. This is one of two Ambrose Tournaments we host each year, as a School Fundraiser, so all High School Old Girls and old Boys, plus those with children, granchildren etc at Dannevirke High, please support this event, where the High School is putting in an effort to help themselves.

North Island LVA. Ohope Golf Club Monday 4th .Wednesday 6th. All the best to Donald Speedy (President North Island LVA) and the other 13 players heading to Ohope on Saturday for this years Tournament Keeping your heads down shouldn't be a problem,, just hope there is only one ball in your vision.

What's on at the Dannevirke Golf Club

Evening all,

Ashley Pedersen, It is with sadness I report the sudden death on the 15th of Ashley Pedersen. Ashley was one of the group that joined Nick, Harpo, Bob, and the many others who play several times per week, following his retirement from Dannevirke New World. Our thoughts go out to his family and fellow golfers.

Saturday 23rd February: Marae Tournament 11am multi tee start. Stephen Paewai advises they are playing rain hail or shine, as the food has been bought and all had other plans are in place. You can still rock up on the day, and be put into the draw. This tournament has been going since Hepa Tatere was President, with our elder statesmen Bung and Billy and associates attending many neighboring Marae Tournaments to drum up support for their local fundraiser. The three local Marae take turns in hosting, and being the benefactor of the fund raising effort for that year.

Pennants 2019 Pennants kick of on Sunday 3rd March, with Dannevirke having teams in the following grades, Championship 1 and 3, Handicap 1,3,and 4. Attached are the draws for each grade, including dates, byes, and host Clubs. We have a busy first round with Handicap 1, 3 and 4 all playing at Dannevirke. Handicap 1 has 6 teams, whereas 3 and 4 only have 4 teams, as there is a bye in both these grades.

However it is still 84 players to get moving, and then be fed and watered after their rounds.

The annual marae tournament is being held on Saturday 23 February details are on the board and those interested can put their names up or contact Stephen.Paewai

Club Championships: The Match Committee confirmed at their meeting on tuesday, that we will proceed with the Autumn / Early winter Champs this year, commencing on March 9th. Groups will be confirmed following the handicap change on 20th February. From here Stephen paewai will make the groups of 16, and on Thursday 7th March a Tee draw will be made available through Whats On. A reminder, if you are not participating this year, please advise the starters office on Saturday, or send me an email. To date I have received 2 replies from David Speedy and Jamie Arrandale. Please assist here, as nothing worse than making up a draw, then finding people give the matches, because they didn't want to be in the draw. Remember all full playing members will be in the draw unless we hear otherwise.

Pennants 2019. Below is a bit of cut and paste from a message we received today from Wayne Mudgway Acting Administrator GOLF HB & PBW Inc

We have had a number of withdrawals from last year (we had 50 teams last year, currently we have at best 46). The casualty is C4, three teams withdrew and I had to fill a spot in C3 so Karamu went up, leaving OngaOnga and Hawkes Bay. I have spoken to both clubs and while disappointed, they are accepting/understanding of the situation (I thank them for that).

Championship division is exactly that, championship, so in putting that competition together I have been mindful of keeping the teams in finishing order as per last year.

Waipukurau pulled out of Championship altogether (all levels of Championship) so with Dannevirke being the highest finishing team in C2 (apart from clubs already represented in C1) so I have put them into C1.

Handicap: I have endeavored to have some resemblance of H1 to H5 but in doing so have shuffled teams about to try and re-counter some of the travel clubs have to endure. It is the biggest issue/grizzle I get but funnily enough Wairoa and Dannevirke are not fazed by it. Both Clubs have 3 teams in handicap division so I have put them together. The idea is they will all play on the same day at the one venue. So this year it will be Dannevirke and next year it will be Wairoa.

H2 is almost a southern zone with 2 Hastings clubs and 4 southern clubs.

The rest I have placed as well as I can bearing in mind trying to accommodate everyone.

What we need is three more teams!!

I have attached a spreadsheet with I have it looking at the moment. If we get no more teams then we will reshuffle the handicap division but the plea is at this point, is please re-check if you can field another team. (New Option is the tag at the bottom of the spread sheet)

I only have one from Waipukurau and none from Puketitiri (who have had teams before), so maybe these clubs can re-look at it. It sure would be appreciated.

I want/need/have to have a draw ready by Monday and propose to send it out on Monday working with what we have got. Time ticks by and I have run out of solutions.

Please dont be critical of how the team structure is the moment, I believe it is as common sense as I can get it. There may be something that doesnt quite suit your club, email and let me know and if it works Ill look at it.

Saturday 9th February . Summer Cup Matchplay Round 2. Please advise the starter if you have a match, so that can pair you up. Round 3 is scheduled for next Saturday the 16th.

Sister Clubs. This year Dannevirke hosts the annual Sister Club Tournament over Queeens Birthday weekend. commencing with a greet and meet Friday night, golf Saturday, Tournament day Sunday, followed by prize giving, and a party sunday night. Many of our members have participated over the past 30 odd years, but there is talk that some of the other clubs are ready to end the event. That being said, if this is to be the last tournament, lets go out with a bang. Stephen Paewai has prepared the below history (not complete) and over the next few months we will keep you up to date of this years event.

With Dannevirke hosting the Sisters Club tournament this year I thought I would write a bit of a history of the tournament, though ascertaining dates is proving difficult. What has been established is the tournament originated when the local publican Charlie Quintal, a coaster, suggested the Golf Club go down to Greymouth and play golf against the local Club. 1972 was mentioned but has been difficult to confirm as the Friendship Plaque was presented by Arthur Chambers of Weedons in 1984, that year the tournament was played in Greymouth, in 1985 it was played in Patea.

So when did Patea first play in the tournament? Greymouth last hosted it in 1988 but won it at Patea in 1989. Was this the last year they participated? In 1992 Rarangi hosted the tournament, I presume they joined in 1990 or 1991. Can you shed any light on this?

The Alex Bergen Memorial was first presented in 1990. I’ve been told by one of our vets he was a Taranaki man, who was the County Clerk for the Woodville County Council but returned to Taranaki and was tragically killed in a car accident. Any other information would be appreciated.

If the tournament was first played in 1972 then Patea will be hosting the 50th playing of the event in 2021. We should consider what we can do to celebrate this occasion.

Sisters Club History: The Friendship Plaque has been contested 35 times since 1984. It was first won be Greymouth in Greymouth. They won it on two more occasions before withdrawing from the competition. Patea won it at Patea in 1985, then in 1986 Weedons won it at home folllowed by Dannevirke winning at home in 1987. Greymouth were the first to win it consecutively in 1988 at home and in 1989 in Patea. Rarangi first hosted the Competion in 1992 and won the Shield.. Dannevirke has won 10 times including two away wins, Patea in 2017, and Weedons 2018. Patea have also won 10 times. Rarangi have won eight times with three away wins. Weedons have only won it at home on 4 occasions, the last time being 2006. Patea had a run of three consecutive wins 2008-2010. Dannevirke can match this by winning at home in 2019. Stephen Paewai was informed the Sisters Club started in 1972, something that requires confirmation, as it doesn't align with the Friendship Shield. If confirmed then the 50th playing of the event is scheduled for Patea in 2021. I.m sure this bit of history will jog the memories of members who travelled or played in this competition at home many moons ago. Regards Steven

2019 Championships : As previously advised, this year we will trial Autumn/ early winter Championships, commencing Saturday 9th March, with finals in May. Again all players will be included unless they state otherwise. The best medium for that advise is to send me a reply email and I can colate a list for Steven Paewai to leave out of the draw. So you are in, unless I hear to the contrary. The starters office on Club days will also take these names, if you are not computer savy.

Sisters Club

The Dannevirke Golf Club is hosting the annual Sisters Club tournament at Queen’s Birthday weekend, Friday 31 May – Monday 3 June. A meeting is being held on Monday 4 February at 7.30 pm at the Golf Club to begin arrangements for the event. If you are able to assist with the running of this event please come along to the meeting, if you are unable to attend but want to help please contact Stephen Paewai at steveandmoira@xtra.co.nz or 0211658685.

The tournament has been running for over 40 years and involves the Dannevirke, Patea, Rarangi (Blenhiem) and Weedons Golf Clubs. Although playing numbers have been declining in recent years it was decided to continue running the tournament in it’s current format. This starts with a meet and greet on Friday evening, a round of golf Saturday followed by an evening meal, the tournament is held on the Sunday with the presentation of trophies, an evening meal and entertainment. We are keen to get good support as the Dannevirke Golf Club has won the last 2 years, which is unprecedented as the home team has a significant advantage and we want to make sure of maximising our advantage this year.

Match Committee. The Penalty Area formally called hazard to the right of number five has been reinstated, (Red Pegs installed) . From the tee, there is out of bounds along the back of the carpark up to the Chemical Shed, thereafter it becomes Penalty Area finishing behind the 6th Tee.. Remember rules 13 and 14 from the 20 Must Know Rules of Golf Changes for 2019. Rule 13. Penalty areas replace water hazards, and you can move loose impediments, ground your club and take practice swings in penalty areas without penalty, just as you can on the fairway or in the rough. Rule 14. You can't take releif from a penalty area unless you are at least 95% certain your ball is in the penalty area.

From the handicapper “Occasionally we receive cards from other golf courses, while we can enter them the standard practice is to leave your card at the course at which you played and the cards will be entered at that course, We do get incorrectly completed cards, more frequently than we would like, we then go to the markers card to compare scores. A simple test is to add your nett score and stableford and the total is 107, 109 for ladies, the exception is when you have a couple of non scoring holes.”

From the management Committee meeting: Due to certain persons spreading mistruths regarding Friday Golf entry fees, we will again outline both Friday and week end competitions, and how they are paid out.

Fridays. $10 Entry Fee of which $1 goes to the Club, $2 to Twos, $2 to Jackpot $5 Competition. The Jackpot money is used to fund the last Friday of the month for the person or persons going the furtherest with 2 stableford points or better. Payout $100. Secondly any player who goes all the way (18 holes) on any Friday with 2 points or better receives $100. Ammended Rule. You do not have to have played more than 5 Fridays to quailfy for jackpot payments. All players starting earlier than normal start time of 11.30 onwards have to have entered their name on the start sheet, but can pay later. Players are not permitted to enter the competition after playing nine holes. Fridays competition is played as a single field, not split into handicap grades

Saturday Competition: $10 Entry $1 goes to the Club, $2 Twos, $7 Competition. The field is split into Senior 0-14 and Junior 15 +. Thus should we have 10 Seniors and 20 Juniors on a Saturday, the prize pools are $70 and $140 respectively.

Hopefully this clears the air for all members, but should there be any questions they should be directed at Mike Matthews Club Captian, Doug Lochead Friday Starter, or any member of the Match or Management Committee. Be very clear, neither of the Club travel groups are funded from the Club or these Competitions , and it is disapointing that such rumours have been circulated.

Attached is the draw for the 2019 Summer Cup, following last week ends qualifying round. A couple of nett 76s made the cut, but the others and those above 76 obviously did not. There is always next year.

The match committee met on Tuesday evening to set the programme for the year, and the question was asked, "why do we play championships during the winter?" Apart from history, there is possibly no sane reason, so the proposal for this year is to play Autumn Championships. The dates being 9th March (all in unless you chose to be left out for the year) 23rd March, 27th April, 11th May and finals 16th June. What do you think? If you wish to express an opinion via email, please reply to Mike Matthews < mikematthews058@gmail.com > For the record, you own your comments, so if a general discussion is required, these comments and the author may be read out in the clubhouse. If Champs move to these dates, which has traditionally been Wiffin Cup dates, then Wiffin will be played on the old Championship dates, a simple swap over. There was also discussion as to reinstating the red pegs along the right of No5 ? To be confirmed.

Competition Sheets. A proposal that Competition Sheets for Friday Saturday and Sunday rounds will be available in the foyer .Members are requested to enter competitions before commencing play. and if the office our shop is not manned when you put your name in, please add TP (To pay) after your name, and at the conclusion of play, hand in your card and entry fee

Out of bounds local rule. The new local rule as outlined in the January 1 2019 rule changes,has not been adopted at this stage by your committee. We will see what is happening at otheer GHB Clubs, As your GHB delegate, I will ask at the next meeting, who is adopting it, The Association will then need to decide, if they want to use it when GHB events are held at the various clubs. A work in progress at this stage, so bear with us please.

A message from our House Manager, Stephen Paewai, On Saturday 19 January the lounge has been hired for a private function and therefore golfers will need to drink downstairs following Saturday’s round. The club has been hired a number of times recently and we have 3 bookings confirmed for the remainder of the year, the next event is a wedding in May. It’s appreciated the hiring of the club does cause some inconvenience to members, however we ask for your cooperation as this provides some additional income for the Golf Club.

Happy New Year, I trust you have all had a good festive season, and are ready to hit the fairways, for the love of golf, or the 19th, or the exercise,

Saturday 12th January. Summer Cup Qualifying, Top 32 to go through to MatchPlay. Please enter Summer Cup into the Competition area if you want to go into the Matchplay draw. First card of the weekend accepted.

Attachment. With the new Rules coming into effect on January 1, we have had a member produce a document to assit members with the changes. I hope many of you will be able to access this attachment.

I also include an explanation that I read in a September publication regarding out of bounds or lost balls.

"Probably the biggest change is in the introduction of a local rule which will allow you to hit your next shot from the vicinity of where it was lost, or where it went out of bounds. Because it is just a local rule, it will almost certainly not be used in professional tournaments or other major events. In other words it will be a rule for you and I, provided your club has chosen to have it in use. How it works. If you hit a tee shot out of bounds or into an area where it could be lost, you don't have to play your third shot from the tee. Instead you will be able to go up to the area where the ball is out of bounds, or where you think the ball was lost. From there you choose the nearest place on the FAIRWAY, not nearer the hole, and drop a ball within two club lengths. Your next shot will be your fourth, but at least you have gained the distance the ball went and you are playing from the fariway, This will be an option many will choose if the ball has at least gone a reasonable distance. If it hasn't you may still opt to play three off the tee "

Thanks to our members for your support of the annual Christmas Cheer last Saturday. A great day weather wise, and some pretty impressive golf. Chris Mason, a par round!. It's always good to arrive at the 14th and be welcomed with a ham sandwich and refreshments, followed by a donation to the haggle. If ever theres a day you are going to miss the green on number 14, its when Marcus has your money. We done guys, and thanks for giving up your day to entertain and feed us. Thanks also to Margaret and helpers for loading the prize table, and members of the Match and House committees for your work on the day.

Sunday 9th December, Amrit Prasad had a hole in one on the 14th. Congratulations Amrit. Just as well it wasn't 24 hour prior, the boys may have needed another bottle of whiskey.

Also on Sunday, Rodney Henricksen picked up a pair of glasses beside the mens number two tee. They are brown, and he thinks they are ladies prescription glasses. However they may belong to a man, who are we to judge?. If you haven't been able to read the newspaper this week, they may be yours. Rodney has them at home, so give him a call on 374-9937.

Well, another year done and dusted. Over the holiday period, we will keep with the 11.30am card draw on Saturdays, so members know they will get a game if they turn up prior to that time. Our first official event of 2019 is Summer Cup Qualifying on Saturday 12th January.

On behalf of the Management Committee, Greens, House, Seniors,Ladies and Twilight Committees, thankyou for your envolvement this year. Saturdays have attracted some of the larger fields seen on Mens Club days for some time. We still have more full playing memebers than we see, but their continued support of Dannevirke Golf Club is is valued. Have a very Merry Christmas, and a great New Year. Travel safely. Remember treat the roads like fairways, you need to stay slightly left of centre, The rough is not a good place to be.

The forecast looks promising, so get your groups together and head on out for our annual Christmas Cheer. Captain Mike is tied up with two performances of Allo Allo on Saturday, so Timmy and the Match Committee are doing the honors. Please be early and leave the starting team plenty of time to organise the field.

Greenwood Cup . A full weekend of golf at Napier last week proved to be a big challenge for our team. A very strong Hastings team ( eventual winners) dealt our team a heafty blow on Satuday morning. The team regrouped for a five and a half, four and a half loss against Maraenui Saturday afternoon. Sunday morning, we went down 6 / 4 to Onga Onga, and in the afternoon a loss to Karamu six and a half to three and a half.. At the end of the weekend, Hastings were overall winners with 11 points and 53 games, ahead of Maraenui, Napier and Onga Onga on 8 points, then came Dannevirke with 6, HB Golf 5, Karamu 4 and Waipukurau 1. I beleive a number of our team suffer from lack of golf, as they are family men, and do not get to play the amount of golf the city team members do. Dannevirke host round 1-3 next year, Waipukurau Club have ceased to exist as a singular team, and will be playing next year under the CHB banner with players drawn from Waipukurau, Waipawa and Porongahau. Thanks to our team memebers, selector Richie Gray, caddies and supporters for for your efforts this year. Onwards and upwards.

Annual General Meeting. A smaller than normal number of members attending the AGM on Monday night. Secretary / Treasurer Miranda Hobbs presented a solid set of accounts, with a $25,506 surplus. Bank and investment reserves have been maintained with balances similar to last year. One note being the Grant for the roof repair is in this years income, but the account for the work will be in next years expenditure. We remain indebted to both The Infinity Foundation $45,101, and Pub Charity $17,308 for their continued support of our club with their Grants. Thanks to our sub committee for their efforts in obtaining these Grants. With the retirement of President Brendan Poole and myself the following persons have taken office for 2019. President Tony Peeti, Vice Presidents Vaughan Hales, and Peter Greatbatch. Club Captain Mike Matthews Ladies Captain Margaret Stephenson Match Committee Zane Gregory Willie Veitch Richie Gray, Timmy Bell, Ray Ward, Doug Lochead, Stephen Paewai and Margaret Stephenson, House Committee, James Walker, Bazil Mott, Peter Drummond, Dipak Makan, Bernie Williams and Stephen Paewai. Saturday 24th November: Card draw 11.30am. Note, we will be starting on the 1st and 5th tee only on Saturday, as we are hosting a wedding on the Course behind the 9th green at 3pm. Our aftermatch will be in the lower bar.

Tuesday 4th December; Veterans Christmas Cheer and presentation day

Saturday 8th December Christmas Cheer 12 noon Shot Gun Start. This is one event where members can make up their own four. Entry sheet in the Clubhouse foyer. Individuals will be accomodated on the day

Evening all,

Feilding Inter club; Thank you to the 38 members who turned out to make this Inter Club a fantastic day. The morning tea for our guests of scones, picklets, muffins topped with jam and cream (real whipped cream), what a delight, and really appreciated by the Feilding members. Feilding had 25 players. Thanks to Brian & Kieran for coming out and mowing the greens, which really does showcase our course at its very best. The scoring was hot, with Dannevirke taking out the Chadwick & Graham Cup with a Stableford aggregate of 35.6 versus Feilding 34.04. Scoring 40 or more points for Dannevirke Peter Drummond, Ken Barnett, Wendy Poole, Wendy Parkes, Margaret Stephenson, Vaughan Hales, Chick Fisher, Warren Ridge, Jim Bassett and myself.

Saturday 17th Sunday 18th November: Greenwood Cup Rounds 4-7 Napier GC. The team is unchanged from that which competed on 13th October. The team is in a very good position on the leader board, and heads to Napier, determined to do their very best. On behalf of all members, we wish you well

This week at the Dannevirke Golf Club

Evening all,

After last week end, i beleive, its best to ignore weather forecasts leading into tournaments. Last saturday & Sunday were to produce gale force winds and torrential rain, so Friday Megan Seatter and I devised Plan B for the St Joseph's School Ambrose Tournament. Satuday 8am we decided the easiest plan was to proceed, and proceed we did. Wind yes, rain, not a drop, so the 20 teams 60 players enjoyed a social day of 3 ball Ambrose. They were well hosted by the School staff and parents. Thanks again St Joesph's School

Saturday night I was thinking we won't be playing tomorrow, but again wind yes, rain no. Thirteen pairs contested the MCI sponsored SHB 36 Hole Mixed Foursomes. This is not a large field, but those who participate enjoy their day. Gross winners being Margaret Stephenson and George Freeman, Nett Joy Charmley and myself, Stb Wendy & Brendan Poole. Thanks to ian McKenzie for coming up from Masterton and partnering Rosie Quick, as well as flying the flag for MCI. Our thanks to MCI & Associates for their continued sponsorship for this event. Thanks also to the members who assisted Robbie Benson, who had a hip malfunction while putting his shoes on in the car park. Not sure that a trip over the Saddle in an ambulance would be that comfortable. Hope all is well.

Saturday 10th November: Feilding Inter Club hosted by Dannevirke Golf Club. A text from their Captain tells me they have 21 players coming, including 5 ladies. Morning tee from 10.30, card draw from 11.30am. Anyone offering to do a batch of scones?

Saturday 17th Sunday 18th November, Greenwood cup Rds 4-7 at Napier Golf Club. We know that Saturday we play Hastings and Maraenui, Sunday Omga Onga and Karamu, but the exact order is as yet unknown. More information next week

Travelling Golfers. Best wishes to the group of 12 heading south early tomorrow, to play 3 round around Queenstown over the weekend, Next week Rod Henricksen, Doug Stewart and I head to Wanganui for the North Island Chartered Clubs annual Tournament, with rounds at Belmont and Castlecliff.

Monday 19th November Annual General Meeting. Clubhouse 7pm. Discussions over the past few days would suggest we have a President, Club Captain and one, and possibly two Vice Presidents.

A busy weekend coming up, with two Tournaments, and the weather forecast is less than satisfactory.

Saturday 3rd November St Josephs School 3 Ball Ambrose Tournament. 10.30am Tee Off

Megan Seatter and I have already discussed the possiblilty of a postponement date if Saturday dawns ugly. With our inter club with Feilding next week, it would look to be 17th, yet to be confirmed

Sunday 4th November MCI & Associates sponsored SHB 36 Hole Mixed and Mens Foursomes. We have a static number of mixed pairs who contest this trophy, but remember men, we also run a mens foursomes in conjunction with the mixed tournament, so team up and join us.

Saturday 10th November Feilding Interclub at Dannevirke.(Mixed event) Morning tea 10.30 onwards, Tee off 11.30.. Remember the Chadwick Trophy we play for on this day has been contested since 1923. Amazing Imagine the party in 2023.

The greens have been cored, the rain has come, the grass is bolting, so the course is a picture and the greens are well into their healing stage. This rain might slow the run down a bit that was noticable last week. Amrit Prasad 45 points Saturday, and 48 on the yellow Course competition on Sunday. Enjoy your new handicap Amrit.

May the weather predictions be as wrong as normal, so we can proceed with this weekends events.

Here is the latest news from the club

Coring; A great effort this week by Brian, Kieran and helpers. James Walker reported at last nights management committee meeting that the greens were cored and sanded all on Tuesday. Brushing continued yesterday, and today the cored tee areas were to be mowed, so that the cores are broken up and the soil can fill the holes again. Great weather for it, and when you get to work with dry sand, the whole process is much easier. The Course should be open mid day Friday.

From the Management Committee meeting 24/10/18. Brendan Poole gave notice that he is standing down from the Presidents role, as well I am standing down as Club Captain . We currently have one Vice President, who is not in a position to move to President at this stage Please give this some serious thought, and discuss with your golfing friends. Ladies it would be nice to have our second Lady President in 116 years?. We have a couple of prospects for Vice President, and I am sure the Match Committee can come up with a Club Captain. Nomination forms will be in the clubhouse form this week end

Coaching, My apologies to the members who have indicated they wanted a lesson with Brian Doyle. I will get him here shortly. The ladies had him here yesterday, so we will book another date for other Club members. I will keep you informed..

Remember, the greens have just been cored, so there will be plenty of sand around this weekend.

Last weekends Greenwood Cup Rounds 1-3 would have to have yielded the best result for many years by our team, winning all three matches. Four more to go in November, so to the team, well done thus far, and all the very best for rounds 4-7. This is how things panned out (written by Wayne Mudgeway) GHB Secretary

"Round One of the prestigious Greenwood Cup was held over the weekend, the hosting shared by the OngaOnga and Waipawa Golf Clubs. I wasn’t present but I understand Saturday the weather was a bit on the cold side (in fact very cold side) but Sunday had a bit more sunshine.

A big thank you to OngaOnga and Waipawa for making their course and facilities available.

Some interesting results to come out of the weekends matches which will make the second round at Napier in November very intriguing.

Unbeaten on 6 points are Dannevirke, flying the flag for the smaller clubs with wins over Napier, Hawkes Bay and Waipukurau and a commanding 21 games won out of a possible 30 In second place are Maraenui with 5 points (18.5 games won), also unbeaten but a half with OngaOnga keeps them in with a big chance next month. OngaOnga are also unbeaten and officially sit in 3rd place with 4 points (19 games won) by virtue of the half with Maraenui, another one with Hastings and a win over Karamu. Also on 4 points and in 4th place are defending champs Napier (17.5 games won) and I guess all these teams are in a position to win overall; whichever one doesn’t lose a another game. Hastings sit in 5th place on 3 points (18 games won) but will most likely need results to go their way to be a winning chance. Hawkes Bay are in 6th with just the 1 point (11 games won), Waipukurau 7th, also on 1 point (10.5 games won) and in 8th place without a win at this stage is Karamu (4.5 games won). Karamu are having their first taste of Greenwood, having won promotion in a challenge match over Takapau back in July.

So some great golf is in store next month and as you can see 5 teams are still in with a chance – some bigger chances than others but with the best of our golfers going head to head, it is going to be very exciting."

Friday 19th October; Twilight commences, Chappy Maniapoto is taking a well earned rest from the BBQ this year, so our new BBQ queen is Emily Mott. Trialing Friday twilight for a while, as we clash with tennis and social darts on Thursday

Andrew Henare NZPGA Golf Professional Napier golf Club: I'm Andrew Henare the golf professional of the Napier Golf Club, with the start of spring upon us, I'm seeing whether your Golf Club would like the opportunity to have a golf professional attend your course over 5 consecutive weeks. I would like to run 5 x 90 minute clinics. I would love to bring as many potential members to your course, and to assist you in getting as many new golfers as possible to attend these clinics. I would supply all range balls / equipment for these clinics. All for $99 per person

The above offer from Andrew has potential to bring new members to the club. A new concept,. giving someone the chance to try the game, a bit like learning to drive, learn the basics first before you tackle the course. Seven and a half hours training before hitting the road sounds like a good idea. Obviously this requires numbers, and a club member to drive the concept, and assist Andrew as needed. Please contact myself or Brendan if willing to assist or if you have names of people interested in participating.

Management Committee: Fixing the unseen. For those unaware, the flat roof on the upstairs part of the Club house is in urgent need of repair. Inspection last year found a refit was required. we have been successful in receiving funding from Pub Charity for close to $18,000 to repair this. Thanks to our funding committee for keeping these applications going in. Greatbatch Builders will be on the job in the near future

Good to see another field of 40 players last Saturday for the Semi finals of Championships and Plates. I think we only have two or three games to be completed before finals day on Saturday 6th October. Good conditions last Saturday, and with the Greens freshly mown on Saturday morning, (thanks Brian & Kieran) scoring was hot.

Saturday 29th Septemeber. 11.30am Card draw,

Sunday 30th September. Daylight saving cuts in so put your clocks forward an hour, otherwise everyone will have gone when you get there.

Saturday 6th October: Club Champs. In the mens field Seniors Intermediates and Junior A all have 36 hole finals, Junior B 27. The ladies also play their finals on this date. Full draw next Thursday night

Saturday 13, Sunday 14th October: Greenwood Cup Rounds 1-3. hosted by Onga Onga and Waipawa, (Takapau withdrew hosting when they lost the challenge match) Dannevirke playes at Waipawa, and have rounds against Hastings, Napier and Waipukurau

Kitt, Kerr Hape Simpson Foursomes: Last Saturday 16 pairs contested the annual foursomes competition with winners being Kitt, Ray Ward & Syd Hikawai, Kerr, Rod Henricksen & Doug Stewart, Hape, Tim Bell & Peter Drummond, Simpson Dipak Makan & Bazil Mott. Coaching; I caught up with Brian Doyle last Thursday in Napier, and as always Brian is keen to come down and support out Club. Wednesdays suit Brian best, and we are looking at one hour lessons, with 40 min iutes coaching, ten minutes on note writing etc, and ten minutes ball collecting. Lessons are $70 per hour. Available times being 9am, 10am, 11am, Lunch 12.30pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm, 3.30pm. The date is not confirmed yet but will be after Championship finals on Oct 6th Can I have expressions of interest please as to who wants a lesson booking. Brian will also do a two hour group session if that helps, but on day one if we get 7 persons wanting a lesson, we will look to hold a second day within a couple of weeks.

We also have a proposal from Andrew Hanare from the Napier Golf Course. Andrew is keen (as part of the PGA) to hold sessions for persons wishing to take up Golf. In essence we go out to the community seeking a minimum of 6 persons wishing to take up golf, and get them several lessons with Andrew before they become a member. The key to this programme is having a personality within the Club who will get these people together, and keep them close during the lesson days, so that they in time become Club Members. This programme has been run at Waipukurau, and I beleive 35 people went through the Course, of which a high majority are now members. If you wish to read more about this programme read page 15, " Learning to play golf is a key to staying in the game" in the September edition of Pacific Golfer, which are on the table just inside the main doors at the Clubhouse. The above paragraph is a rough overview of the programme, more details to follow, but possibly give some thought to what you can do to promote this, and are you willing to assist. Kevin Pike assured me On Tuesday night that it is a lot of work for someone, but in their case, the rewards were brilliant

Friday 14th Sept. Cape Turnagain (Herbertville) Stockies & Cockies Tournament 11.30 morning tee 12 noon tee off. It was a little damp under foot there last Sunday, but would have improved this week. You certainly will not leave Cape Turnagain unfeed or watered. If you haven't ventured out there before, take the trip, you will have an enjoyable day.

A handful of our members headed to the coast last Sunday to play at Cape Turnagain and join the Golf Club and district farewell John & Sue Barnett. The Barnetts have spent nearly 29 years managing Burnview Station and brought up their three children there. They will be greatly missed by the community for their work in the district and on committees for School, Fire Brigade, Golf Club and Fishing Club etc. . Johns speech was split into three categories Farming, Fishing, Golf. Wishing them both well with their move to Motueka ( infact between Nelson and Motueka). Golf trips to Nelson on the cards now with the Barnetts and Brian Leatherland being residents in the area.

Ruahine Roswbowl. I am happy to confirm that the Ruahine Rosebowl, will spend the next year in our Clubhouse, after the final round at Takapau last Saturday. A mentioned previously we went to Takapau one and a half points behind Pongaora, but our team of Zane Gregory, Willie Veitch, Bung Lilo and Mike Matthews, pulled off a win for 5 points, with Pongaora finishing third with 3 points, giving us the win by half a point. Great effort. Thanks to VP Tony Peeti for selecting the team, given we had about 16 players up there, you either get it very right or very wrong, trying to select a team of 4 from which the best three all day nets count. My thanks to all our members who have supported the five Rose Bowl tournaments this year. It is a big commitment, but you meet some great people at these tournaments, and long lasting friendships evolve. There are some great stories out there from Tournaments gone by. A shortened history, the Ruahine Rosebowl was donated by Robbie Benson, first won by Pongaroa in 1987. Dannevirke will now have their named engraved on the trophy seven times.

Manawatu v Hawkes Bay Event. Last Saturday we hosted junior and senior teams from Hawkes Bay and Manawatu playing their annual fixture. A solid win by the seniors 5 1/2 to 1/2, and the junior went down 3 1/2 to 2 1/2. Good to see Life Member R B Dailey our their watching golf. He was impressed with the distance todays players are getting off the tee. He doesn't beleive he has ever seen anyone as far down number two as Mako Thompson was with his tee shot. A great day in the sun watching some good golf. Thanks to Kieran for coming out and mowing the greens Saturday morning, and to our bunker rakers for their good work. Although we had our regular wet under foot areas, we appear to be no worse than any of the Manawatu Clubs at present. Favourable comments by all

Match Committee. The match committee met on Tuesday night to review whats past and check whats coming up. Richie Grey updated us with his thoughts on the Greenwood Team. He is speaking to members individually so they are aware of whats happening and when. He didn't want to name the team just yet, as this email goes onto social media, and he doesnt want our team out there too early. The other point of discussion was presnetation of trophies. To be fair, we do this badly. The ladies do their own thing and the men have never really had a prize giving. To be fair, the Match Committee have tried, but we need the support of you the members. We all thought a prize giving dinner night would be great, but again without your support it won't happen. Any thoughts please. Happy to try anything.

Coaching. Having a discussion with Andrew Henare on Thursday about an offer he has put to our Club. More to follow on this.

Hopefully the rain will stop so we can get on the Course Saturday, although it will be soft underfoot.

I beleive we have had a couple of aces recently, congratulations to Malcolm Priday #17 and Ronnie Turner #7.

Saturday 1st September. Takapau 30 Hole Strokeplay Tournament, final of Ruahine Rosebowl. We have a bus of 16 players heading to Takapau on Saturday. From that we have to pick a team of four for the Rosebowl Team, from which the three best all day netts count. All the best guys and girls, Takapau has also embrassed the change and having a ladies section in their tournament, for weekend players. Hopefully over the next few years the numbers in this field will grow.

Manawatu V Hawkes Bay. At home we are hosting the Manawatu v Hawkes Bay Rep fixture. Both Associations have teams of six Juniors and six Seniors. Our own Brad Truesdale is in the Senior team. This fixture has six tee spots booked on number one tee from 11am. Our Club players have two options, 1, If you wish to play early, number 1 tee is open until 10.50am, alternatively a card draw will be done at 11.30 off number ten tee. Last year we split the Rep fixture off No1 and 10, but this caused issue with Referees and selectors. so that is why they are going from one tee only.

Members of our match committee will be in takapau on Saturday, so resources will be streached. I will be at the Club from 10.15 onwards, hosting the rep fixture, and arranging the Club Competition, so patience is requested, organising carts etc for Referees and Selectors, plus any other requests sent my way, likewise after golf, there may be a shortage of Bar personel, so again any assistance would be appreciated.

Championship Match Play./ Plates, I beleive a good number of matches were completed last Saturday. For those unable to play last week please get those matches played prior to Saturday 22nd, so we can have a clean sweep of Semi Final matches on that day.

Saturday 15th September Kitt Kerr Hape Simpson Foursomes. This is the only day each year we play a mens foursomes event. Two players A & B make up foursome, Players A tees off number 1, players B plays the second shot, player A the third etc, etc. The foursomes handicap is player A + B handicaps added and divided by two. Your nett being the total gross minus combined handicap = nett. Best nett wins the Kitt Cup, 2nd nett the Kerr Cup, 3rd nett the Hape Cup and 4th nett the Simpson Tray. Entries on the day. By all means make up yoir own pair, although pairs will be made up on the day.

Management Committee: All's well on the home front. Finances are healthy, and we appear to be growing our membership ever so slightly. We have a fund raising committee that has brought together a list of projects we will apply to Charities for funding Our current application is for repairs to the roof on the two story section of the clubhouse, which may be unseeen, but is rather unhealty, and in semi urgent need of remedial work.

What's On. With the demise of newspapers etc, emails have become the lifeline of our Club. With over 100 members receiving this every week, you are being kept informed. However Grrr, some information back would be good, ie the hole in one news at the top of todays email might be three weeks old, but if I don't know I can't include it. Email lesson number one, to send me something go toyour last What's On email and clik on Reply to Sender, type the message and hay presto its done' Look forward to receiving your snippets.

Saturday 18th August; Lui Paewai Trophy. 11.30am Card draw, The Lui Paewai Trophy will be presented to the individual with the best overall Stableford on the day. 2017 winner was Warren Ridge, so come on out Saturday, and see if you can get your name on this glorious Trophy.

Saturday 25th August. Round 2 Championship Matchplay, and Round 1, Plate Play. At this stage, everyone who went into the Championships and was beaten in the first round will automatically go into the Plate rounds, unless I am notified otherwise. For the spirit of the Club, we ask that members participate in this competition.

Saturday 1st September; Takapau 30 Hole Strokeplay Tournament, plus at Dannevirke, we host the Manawatu v Hawkes Bay Rep fixture. Teams comprise 6 Seniors and 6 Juniors. Yet to be confirmed, but I beleive the Rep fixture tee time is 11am.

Sunday 9th September. Cape Turnagain are hosting a farewell day for Sue & John Barnett, who are moving south to Motueka. John has been a frequent player at our Rosebowl, and Coronation Cups events over the past 30 odd years.as has Sue at the Ladies events. The input from both John & Sue, as Captain, President, Secretary Treasurer etc will be sadly missed at the Cape. Format for the day is 12 noon tee off, with a shared evening meal

SHB 27 Hole Strokeplay Tournament: Last Saturday saw the playing of this years 27 Hole Strokeplay Tournament. 47 players including a small field of 4 ladies played in damp conditions in the morning, but dryer in the afternoon. Underfoot conditions were a challenge late morning, but not too bad playing the second part of the tournament on holes 1-9 being the afternoon round. SHB Strokeplay Champion is Clay Lochead with 119 all day gross Senior nett winner was Richard Te ture, morning Stableford Doug Lochead, and pm par Peter Gregory. In the Junior field Gross Winner was Richard Greaves (Pongaroa) nett Amrit Prasad, Stb Mike Matthews and Par Mike Wall (Takapau).

Thanks to Brian & Kieran for an early start mowing the greens. Our greens are in great order and quick. Malcolm for raking bunkers. Thanks also to our Sponsor Adam Webster (Steinlarger) starter Brendan, lunch cooks Margaret Treacy , Wendy & Brendan, and Wendys mum. plus our evening cooks Lulu, Aggi, Lizzy and co. Scorers Gwen and Bernice, and last but not least our members for your support of the tournament, plus the plates you brought for our evening meal. Days like Saturday show the true spirit of our Club, something we can all be proud of.

Saturday 4th August SHB 27 Hole Strokeplay Championship . An SOS for some helpers please. We have decided for lunch to take on the Cape Turnagain idea of cooking meat patties, then allowing players to make a burger, with coleslaw, salad, tomato, beetroot onions etc. I'm asking are there any ladies or men out there not playing in the Tournament who can help put this lunch together. We require a supervisor, and helpers. Maybe a man not playing could do the BBQ. Saturday 21st July Card Draw 11.30am. Appreciate please if we can have the cards in by 11.20am. The Match Committee start getting the groups sorted for the 11.30 Tee Off, and when we think we are all sorted, down the drive comes another car or two after 11.30, wanting to be included. The Match Committee have decided late entries will be off the 5th Tee last, as many members dislike playing in a fives.

Saturday 28th July. Club Champs Round 1 Matchplay. My thanks to Steven Paewai for his assistance sorting the groups and arranging the draws for this years Championships. As I don't have scanning facilities on my home computer, I intend sending them through tomorrow from work. Hopefully my computer skills will allow this. There will be five sheets for the various grades. Note, a tee draw will not be included, (time restraint) but I will send a a What's On Special, Tee draw early next week.

Disappointed last week to hear that the world had stopped going around because the previous Saturdays cards had not been entered into the handicap system. Every member of our Committees are full paying volunteers, and ocasionally things don't happen over night. Thats life. We have checked and no one will be playing in a different grade in the Champs because of this..

Secondly if you can't be bothered reading What's On and aren't aware of your tee times etc, that folks isn't my problem.

Management Committee Meeting Wed 27th June; I have been asked to express our vote of thanks to the following three members. Firstly Ian Clapperton, who is retiring from purchasing for the bar, and over previous years Twilight. Ian has for a long time gone to New World to get Ginger Beer, Orange juice etc, for those who choose not to dring alcohol.. To Marcus Ransom, who donated his digger and time to remodel the track on No6 tee. When this was completed, we had one Saturday working bee to remove rocks from the two new faces in preparation for sowing, and our thanks to the members who attended. We wish to acknowledge the work done since by Bung Lilo, to continue removing stones. To all of these people, on behalf of the management committee and all members thankyou for your time and effort.. The greens committee intend leaving the bank as it is currently, When conditions are dry enough to have vehicles on the course, top soil will be spread onto the banks, any growth sprayed , then grass seed will be applied.

Common sense should prevail currently if your ball lands in this area as it is GUR (ground under repair). After sowing it may have a temporary fence, but currently people are still working on the faces, so fencing would be an inconveniance to them.

I beleive What's On now appears on the Dannevirke Golf Club and Dannevirke facebook pages, so not only members but the community are being kept up to date with whats happening at our Club.

Management Committee Meeting; Wednesday 27th June

Last Sunday Dave Lawrence (GHB Junior selector) brought a small group of Juniors down to play against members of GHB Eagles Association. Amazing that some of Daves players were at the Fiji Open, and others at the Youth Age grade golf in the States. I had the pleasure of being drawn with 15 year old Zeb Kettle from Napier Golf Club, who finished with a par round, which was a great effort in the heavy conditions we are encountering presently. Thanks to Kieran for mowing the greens for us on Sunday morning

On Saturday we held the discussion regarding Saturday Ladies joining the Sattrup & Brannigan 4bbb competition. I received an email from Bob McKee outlining how to play this competition with ladies included with rules for such in the Handicap manual. For members wishing to read these rules, they are printed and displayed in the handicap frame beside the office window. After allowing those who wished to speak for or against, members voted in favour of allowing the Ladies to play. Thankyou to those members who expressed their opinion. Hence forth the matter is closed. . .

Maybe it will be fine overhead on Saturday to get out there and enjoy a round. Please be mindful the Course is really wet currently, so keep carts and trundlers away from soft spots especially in front of 8 and 16. Please do not take trundlers between bunkers and the greens, go around the back of the bunker.

I currently have ten members who have informed me that they don't wish to be included in the Championship draws, any others, please send me an email before Round 1 on 28th July

After this weeks rain, I'm sure the course is going to be pretty heavy for a while. Just a reminder please to keep carts, bikes and trundlers away from Greens and surounds. Too much traffic here has an adverse effect on these areas.

Saturday 16th June; Wiffin Cup Final , Not Wif-In Coohee Cup, one more semi final here then the final. Card draw 11.30am

Sunday 17th June: 11am Junior Interclub Round 2 Eagles v Junior. I beleive we have 12 juniors and 12 or so Eagles taking part in this event, subject to weather conditions. 24 players, 6 fours should only require No1 and 10 tees for 20 minutes max, so members are free to go before or after. There may be some spots to play with the juniors if you wish to wait.

Match Committee: We held a Match Committee Meeting Tuesday, which included a discussion on a matter brought up recently. With the Sattrup & Brannigan 4bbb, due to commence Sat 7th July, we have been asked by one Saturday lady members if she can compete with her husband. In turn two other ladies want to combine and compete. They are offering to play their index off the Mens card and the white course. As we are into promoting golf, we had no objection, but will take it to a Member vote this Saturday. There are matters the ladies need to consider also. 1, they won't be in the Ladies competion for that week as they didn't play the yellow course. 2 Cards can't be handicapped. Guys, if you are ok with it, we will permit it, if not we can say no.

Club Championships Round 1 Matchplay Sat 28th July. As has been the case in the past few years, all members are in and draws will be done in groups of 16, going from lowest to highest index. Please if you don't wish to, or won't be available to compete in Championships, please send me a return email, and I can withdraw your name before draws are done. Thanks for your help with this.

Reporting from last weekends Sister Club event at Weedons Golf Club in Christchurch, Dannevirke are again winners and grinners after taking out the Friendship Shield, for the best stableford aggregate on Sunday Tournament day. (Back to back wins for Dannevirke) Special thanks to Chris Peck, for shooting 80 for 47 stableford points. Our aggregate was 30.9 ahead of hosts Weedons on 30.1, then Rarangi and Patea took out the Piston trophy (the dreaded trophy) . A comment made to Chris was "you must have played alright" his reply being, "You can't play badly and get 47 points"

Saturday 9th June Card draw 11.30am

Sunday 17th June. Junior Interclub Round 2, Juniors v Eagles. This has been shortened to 18 holes, with tee off at 11am. You will be notified rregarding members play on that date, when I get the Junior draw.

Following my request last week for more pairs for the sattrup & Brannigan 4bbb matchplay Cup, we now have seventeen pairs. All pairs will go into a draw, with two being selected, to play early leaving 16 pairs for the event commencing Saturday 7th July.

See what is on this week at the golf club

Evening all,

From last week end, we had a good sized field on Saturday for the Presidents Cup Qualifying Round, The draw will be out for the first round later in June. On Sunday we had two teams contest Pennants finals, Handicap 2, Dannevirke was beaten 5 /4 by Wairoa, and Handicap 4 another Dannevirke Wairoa final, with Wairoa winning 5 1/2 to 3 1/2 . In the Championship grades Champ 1 Napier 5 1/2 Hastings 3 1/2. Champ 2 Hastings and Napier both with 4 1/2. Hastings winning on c/b. Champ3 Hastings 5 1/2 Napier 3 1/2, and Champ 4 Hastings 5 Napier 4. Some very close matches. Once again, thanks to our members who have given their time this year to play in the Pennant competition. Between now and next February the Golf HB, will be reviewing the competition and are alwaya happy to consider changes,(earlier rather than later) As you HB delegate I'm willing to take your ideas to their Meetings.

Saturday 2nd June: We have players all over the country this weekend. Firstly 11 players are heading to Christchurch for the Sisters Club Weekend, this year hosted by the Weadons Golf Club, There is a group playing a 54 hole Matchplay at Fielding, Others are playing the 27 hole strokeplay at Onga Onga on Monday 8.30am Shot Gun Start, plus Waipawa are hosting the Lucy Owen Fundraiser also on Monday.

I'm picking there will be members in Taumaranui as well At home as always, there will be a card draw at 11.30am.

Sattrup & Brannigan FBBB Competition. I have a list of 13 pairs thus far willing to play in this years competition. Can we get three more please to have a field of 16. I have the list at home, and will return it to the Clubhouse Saturday 9th, alternatively email entries to me please bburt@inspirenet.nz .

2015 NZISA Golf Open

CDISC are all set for hosting the 2015 NZISA Golf Open in Dannevirke. We have received a fantastic response for this event, with 87 players registering over all three divisions. It is great to see a high level of interest in this sport, and we are looking forward to hosting you all on Saturday. This newsletter outlines final information for those attending the Golf Open, but if there are any queries please do not hesitate to

Friday Practice:
Players wanting a practice round are welcome to join the local Dannevirke Golf Competition which tees off between 11.00am and 12.00pm. A $20.00 Competition

Entry Fee applies per player (includes Green Fees) where you will be eligible for competition prizes. This fee is paid directly to the Dannevirke Golf Club on the day.

Friday Night A casual ‘Meet and Greet’ will be held at the Mangatera Hotel, located at 391 High Meet & Greet: Street in Dannevirke, from 7.00pm onwards.

Saturday Tournament Control
Golf Open: Tournament Control will be located in the office on the ground floor of the club room. The morning debrief and submission of scorecards will be made here. Score cards are to be collected and submitted by the Team Captain of each group.

9.15am to 9.45am - Player Check In All players are required to check in to confirm your attendance, your playing group, starting hole, to uplift your tournament souvenir, and make payment (if not made prior to the weekend). This will be located upstairs at the clubroom.

10.00am - Welcome and Event Debrief
A brief welcome and event debrief will be carried out in front of the Tournament Control Office located outside of the clubroom. If there are any questions in regards so the Golf Open, these can be asked here.

10.30am - Tee Off
A shotgun start will commence at 10.30am sharp. All playing groups will be allocated a specific hole to start from, which will be provided when players check in. Transport will be available to the furthest tees of the course.

Golf Cart Hire
There are limited carts available for players to hire ($25.00 per cart). If you require one please contact CDISC. This is on a first in, first serve basis, and we prefer to see these left for those who really do require a cart to get around the course.
