What's On 4th April 2024?

Bryan Burt - Club Scribe • Apr 04, 2024

Evening all,

Obituary;  It is with sadness, I report the passing of Alex Hall (Life member) Son Colin called our Secretary to say Alex passed away on Monday 25th March aged 99 years. As a life member Alex continued to send the Club a $100 donation each year, his Membership card arrived between his passing and his funeral service on Thursday 28th , and was put in his casket. President Peter sent the following message,

Miranda messaged me yesterday, to relay your message of the sad news – of the passing of Alex.  Thank you for letting the Golf Club know.

Alex definitely had a good innings. There are still a good number of members who remember Alex for the volunteer work he carried out, helping make the Golf course what it is today.

We also remember his golfing ability well.

On behalf of the Golf Club, I wish to express our sincere condolences, and let you know that we will be flying the flag for the next few days, as a mark of respect for Alex and your family.

Yours Sincerely

Peter Greatbatch

(Club President)

Colins wife Sue replied;

Thank you for your lovely message which I have passed on to Colin.

We will be interring Alex’ ashes in the Mangatera Cemetery on Monday 29th April at 11.00am. It will be a brief service to place him with Margaret and then it is Alex’ shout at the Mangatera Tavern. We feel that is quite a fitting place to gather as it is where he and Margaret used to celebrate wedding anniversaries and birthdays etc.

If you or any of the club members who still remember him would like to join us you would be most welcome.

Captains Comments; (from Captain Mike) Could the Coronation players please bring one or more plates for a shared dinner on Saturday evening. For our new team members, when we go to the country clubs they always put on a substantial meal for us, and this is our turn to pay back. I'm cooking a couple of chickens, but anything savory, vegetable etc please. Don't be shy. Any member who can assist in the kitchen Saturday/ Sunday please email Mike on    mikematthews058@gmail.com. If he has too many offers, he can then inform you. Coronation Cup team breakfast at the Clubhouse Sunday morning at 7.30am.

Thanks to Hamish at Dannevirke Pharmacy for donating 2 new First Aid Kits for club use Mike

I am sure tonight's Obituary will have many members remembering the late Alex Hall. In his years at Dannevirke he did not hit it far, but was very accurate. He used to leave his trundler in a particular place on number 16, and his tee shot would always be within a meter of two of where he had parked it.  A very strong match player. Many a single figure golfer would be told what they had to shoot to beat him, in handicap match play.. A tireless worker for our Club.

Best wishes to our team for this weekends Coronation Cup, and any members playing Championship matches. Don't forget daylight saving ends Sunday morning!

Good Golfing

Evening all, Saturday 4th May; Club Champs semi Finals, 11.30am card draw for balance of field. Match Committee duty Timmy House Committee Stephen Golf Hawkes Bay Pennants; Competition for this year wound up last week after five rounds. The top two teams from each division now play finals. Unfortunately we don't have any teams in the finals this year, but after five round Champ Division 1 finished 5th, Champ 3 finished 6th, and Handicap 2 & 4 both finished 3rd. Thanks to all players and team organizers who have made themselves available this year. Pennats offers both experience in match play, plus a chance to play other GHB courses. Wiffin Cup; The draw is attached, with first round games to be played on or before Sat 13th May, Round 2 is Saturday 17th June. Ample time to contact your opponent and get these matches played please. Sister Clubs; One month to go and we’ll have 70 visitors from our 3 Sister Clubs contesting the 52 nd playing of the Sister Club Quadrangular Tournament. If you want to play, put your name on the list in the foyer. Also, we need assistance to run the tournament. If you are able to help and have a spare couple of hours either on Saturday 1 June or Sunday 2 June please contact Stephen Paewai. We may need at up to 40 trundlers, this will make it easier for our visitors rather than having their vans cluttered with an assortment of trundlers. Regards Stephen. Driveway; The excess chip has now been swept, and picked up. Two speed bumps have been added, one about 50 meters inside the gate, and the other at the entry to the car park. Speed restrictions continue to apply. The predicted rain was minimal (4mm in town) so there may still be some summer run out there. Come on out and enjoy it while it lasts. Regards Stephen Designated car parks; Car parks facing the club house have designated position names on them. Please keep them free for those people Bunkers, divots, pitch marks; We have a handful of members who spend many hours raking bunkers for us. That doesn't mean if you go in them you don't need to rake them. Please always without exception, rake the bunkers before exiting to remove foot and ball marks. Likewise pitch marks on greens and divots on fairways and in the rough should be repaired or replaced. Trundler Shed; Yet again can I remind members using the trundler shed, If you walk out and just push the door behind you, it is not locked. You need to push the bottom right hand button once the door is closed, so that the electronic locking devise can work. PLEASE, the door is being left unlocked day after day. Regards Stephen Driveway; President Peter has today completed some repair work on the side of our driveway into the course, in preparation for sealing. Some areas have been marked with Cones. Please treat these areas with the utmost respect. I know many of you get upset with cones on the road, but this is on our road, so slow down and avoid the edges. Weather permitting, the road may be sealed next Tuesday. State Highway 2; Bridge maintenance on State Highway 2 (SH2) near Dannevirke. (public notification) From 9am Monday 29 April for the duration of 6 days (weather permitting), essential bridge maintenance and asphalt work will begin at Tamaki River Bridge on SH2, near Tamaki River Road, Tahoraiti. These works are scheduled to end on Saturday 4 May at 5pm. Due to the narrowness of the bridge we need to close it to all traffic while this work is completed. Closing the bridge will enable crews to complete the work faster, minimising ongoing disruption to road users. The bridge will be closed 24 hours a day while work is underway with the following detour in place for traffic: Southbound traffic will detour Laws Road, onto Top Grass Road then to Tamaki River Road. Northbound traffic will detour Maharahara Road to Kumeti Road, onto Top Grass Road and then to Laws Road The detour route is suitable for HMPV and is expected to add between 10-15 minutes to journey times. Where required, school buses, emergency services and over dimension vehicles can be convoyed through the site when needed. Thank you for your patience and understanding of these works. For more information please contact HNO-PN@nzta.govt.nz . A bit of information to take in tonight. For those heading to the Cape Saturday, or staying home playing matches, good luck. As always travel safely. Good Golfing👍 Bryan Burt Club Scribe
