Saturday 27th September;  Club day draw at 11.30am. Duty Joe Clarke, House Stephen Paewai

Saturday 27th September;  CHB 27 Hole Stroke play Tournament.

Sunday 28th September;  Beginning of daylight saving. Move your clock forward one hour, or be late for golf!

Saturday 4th October;  Ladies Club Championship finals. Playing 36 holes and commencing at 8.30 am. (Finalists to be named in next week's What's On )

Wednesday 22nd October;   Ladies Dannevirke Pharmacy Shoot Out. This commences with 19 ladies teeing off on number one. Number 10 tee remains open or number 5, but the ladies' field has full right of way.

Sunday 2nd November; SHB 27 Hole Mixed Foursomes (Cancelled). The decision has been made that this event may well have run its course, with only a handful of pairs playing. We are all aware of the history and how, in the 1970s, you had to get your name up early to get into the field. Unfortunately, we no longer live in the 1970s.  We may be able to revive this or a similar event in the future, so we look for ideas going forward. We need people who will walk the walk, not just talk the talk on this one. Starting a fresh, will require a major commitment, so don't expect someone! else to do it, get involved.

Battle of the Saddle Shield;    Battle Report – Dannevirke vs. Manawatu

Last Sunday, ten of Dannevirke’s finest stormed into Palmerston North to take on Manawatu’s best at their home course. Flying the Dannevirke flag were Pat Harold, Brad Truesdale, William Harold, Angus Findlay, Chris Mason, Rhys Harold, Clay Lochead, Brad Dippie, Lance Hambrook, and John Garnett.

The format was singles and four-ball, with 15 points on the line. The conditions? Slippery greens and the usual “welcome to Palmy” howling wind — not exactly golfer-friendly, but no one ever said this was supposed to be easy.

Before the first tee-off, team manager/event organiser/social media coordinator (and part-time motivational speaker) Craig Nash fired up the troops with a rousing speech that was part Braveheart, part Tony Robbins. With spirits high, the boys headed out.

The matches were tight all day, momentum swinging like a dodgy driver off the first tee. But when the dust settled, Dannevirke held its nerve, claiming a hard-fought 8.5 to 6.5 victory.

Not only did we take down Manawatu on their home track, but we also levelled the all-time series at three wins apiece. Safe to say, the beers tasted even better afterwards.

Next year we’ll host them at Dannevirke, where we’ll aim to tip the scales firmly in our favour. In the meantime, the focus turns to the Greenwood Cup in Waipukurau in a couple of weeks, where hopefully we can continue this form!   Regards Brad Dippie. (Selector, Chat GPT reporter)

Eagles Golfing Society of HB Inc;  I have 20 tickets left to sell for the Halberg Foundation raffle, with first prize being a round of golf for four persons at Cape Kidnappers. I will have these at the club Friday and possibly Saturday, subject to sales. Tickets $5 each.

Annual General Meeting;  Monday 8th December. A reminder from Gail for those who submit reports for the Annual Report: please start your preparation and have it to Gail before the end of October. Committees. These include Match, House, Greens, Management, Ladies. This is your Club, and we are looking for some of our younger members to put their hand up for committee duties. It is not by any means onerous, but it is time for a changing of the guard. I am absolutely sure we oldies will gladly let you take our place at the committee tables . Please think about this and put your hand up.

That wraps it for tonight, folks. Hopefully, the wind abates so we can enjoy a game of golf over the weekend.

Good Golfing👍

Saturday 13th December; Shires Fruit & Vege market sponsored Christmas Cheer. 12 noon Shotgun Start. A draw will be posted on our Facebook page on Friday. As we already have 120 in the field and tees allocated, no further entries will be accepted. Please present early at the office to pay your entry fee of $30 and be at your starting tee ready to go at 12 noon. House Committee; Duty Tony Neilson Bar roster 4 pm Tony, Baz and Scott, 4.45 pm Gillian, Angela and Norm, 5.30 pm Tony and Drum, 6.15 pm Stephen and Depak We’re expecting a full field on Saturday, and committee members will be playing and would like to enjoy the evening with their fellow members so we would like your assistance, please. Ask if you can help, for example, if you are heading downstairs,s take a box of empties and put in the recycling, ask if the chiller needs restocking, pick up empty bottles. These little things would be really appreciated, and we can all enjoy the occasion. With large numbers, we quickly run out of $2 coins, so if you have a pocket full of coins, go to the bar and exchange them for notes. Ma pango ma whero ka oti ai te mahi – many hands make light work! Thanks, Stephen. Annual General Meeting; Last Monday saw a muster of around 40 members attend our AGM. A sign of the times, perhaps, but members don't appear to see the significance of this once-a-year meeting. Decisions are made that carry the Club forward and report on the previous year. The committee nominations all went through, and Bernie Williams has been nominated as a Vice President, following Vaughan Hales' resignation earlier in the year. An increase in Subscriptions was approved, and I will report next week for those paying monthly, fortnightly, and weekly, what changes need to be made to keep you up to date. Carts: The last two of our replacement carts arrived on course today. That gives us a fleet now of 8 new and one older cart. These carts are part of our business growth strategy, as a great deal of visiting green fee players request carts at the same time as they book to play, especially group bookings. This forms part of the package we can offer travelling players. Secondly, for various reasons, younger members who have joined clubs since Covid prefer to play in carts. Greenfees & carts this year brought 87k into our club, compared to 62k the previous year. Having Patrick (Harold Golf) on course potentially captures more green fees and cart hire. Cart for Sale; We have one of our original carts for Sale at $500. Batteries may need replacing. Call Captain Zane or ask Patrick for an inspection when he is on course. Next week's What's On will be the last for the year. Looking forward to Christmas Cheer! Good Golfing'👍 Bryan Burt Club Scribe

Saturday 6th December; Club day 11.30 am. Card draw at 11.15 am, Match committee on duty, House committee, anyone available?, as your roster expired on 29th November. Monday 8th December; Annual General Meeting; 7.30 pm at the Clubhouse. The booklet was emailed to you all by Bailey last Monday evening. Saturday 13th December; Shires Fruit & Vege Market sponsored Christmas Cheer Tournament. Our biggest event of the year. If you haven't done so already, please enter your fours on the Entry sheet in the foyer, so a draw can be produced and sent out next Thursday night. Sorry folks, all of our carts have been booked, so no more carts are available. Result : Interclub with Feilding Golf Club last Saturday. For the 7th year in a row, Feilding were the winners on the day. Thank you to the 19 players from Dannevirke who participated. Congratulations to Jacob Stephenson, 75 off the stick and 45 stablefords. Even Jacobs score couldn't lift our average! The rain over the past two days has possibly taken the sting out of the ground, so we may miss the run for a couple of days. Never mind it will be back. Have a great weekend, and see you all on Monday at the AGM. Bryan Burt Club Scribe

Saturday 29th November; Feilding interclub at Feilding. 11.30 am tee off. Tony Peeti & Eru Hauiti are both taking vans, so there may be rides available. Contact these gentlemen directly, please. Tony's van leaves the golf club at 9.50 am. Saturday 29th November; Club day, 11.30 am card draw. Duty Richie House Basil Sunday 30th November; Pongaroa are hosting their Prize Giving and Christmas Cheer Tournament. I believe it is a 12 noon start for anyone interested in attending Saturday 13th December : Shires Fruit & Vege Market sponsored Christmas Cheer. 12 noon shotgun start, entry sheet in the foyer at the Clubhouse. All carts are booked. Once again, our haggle hole (no. 14) will be manned by the formidable team of Glen McClelland & Marcus Ransom. This team of two has given up their time for the past 7 or 8 years to man the haggle hole and donate their proceeds to worthy causes around our community or club. Thanks also to the ham sponsors for the haggle hole. Originally, Vet Services and PGG Wrightson. Vet Services have continued, and I took over the PGG Wrightson sponsorship some years ago. Maybe a bit damp tomorrow, but the forecast for the weekend is good. We are bearing down on 100 years of inter-club fixtures with Feilding (next couple of years I believe). Maybe we can turn the clock back 100 years and go to Feilding by train or horseback and stay for a week!, Watch this space. Happy 40th for yesterday Captain Zane.
