Greenwood Cup; My thanks to Craig Nash, for his comprehensive report on the 2020 competition, below

The shortened 2020 golf season turned out be a winner for the Dannevirke Greenwood cup team.

The Greenwood cup is one of the longest contested cups in NZ golf. Played for by the top 10 players from each of the top 8 Hawkes Bay teams. It is contested via a ‘round robin’ competition meaning an exhausting 7 rounds of matchplay over two weekends.

Last weekend Dannevirke wrapped up the Radonich Salver which is contested for by the four country teams outside of the 4 strong Hawkes Bay city teams. This is only the second time Dannevirke has claimed the trophy in the 18 years of its existence - so a big achievement for the boys.

Weekend one in October was hosted at Dannevirke who presented the course in a fantastic condition, with credit due to the hard working greens team and DGC committee. Dannevirke started with three tough matches, losing narrowly to Maraenui 4.5 to 5.5, Hastings 3 -7 and finally Hawkes bay 6.5 -3.5.

Weekend two however was all Dannevirke’s, starting with a massive win over reigning holders Onga Onga 6.5- 3.5 then accounting for Central HB (combination of Waipukurau, Waipawa , Porongahau and Takapau) 7-3, Karamu 7.5-2.5 before a gallant effort against Napier in the final round on Sunday going down 4 -6.

The win was more significant as 3 key players from last year were out for 2020. Newcomer Craig Evans had a great weekend winning 3 of his 4 matches while the long serving manager Richie Gray stepped in at the last minute and fought hard in his number 9 position. Over the series, Brad Truesdale won 5.5 of his 7 matches proving his ability at the top level of Hawkes bay golf, with Dave Hurrell and Craig Nash securing 5 wins each.

The gutsy performance undoubtedly came from the strong team culture that has developed. The players worked incredibly hard to represent themselves, our Golf club and the Dannevirke district with distinction.

Players representing the 2020 Dannevirke Greenwood team were, Brad Truesdale, Pat Harold, Craig Nash, Hamish Prenter, Syd Hakiwai, Dave Hurrell, Greg Vigers, Chris Mason, Richie Gray, Craig Evans, Brad Dippie and Peter Gregory

On Friday 11 December we’re hosting the Dannevirke High School teachers end of year luncheon. We need a couple of bar staff from about 10.00 am to 4 pm, expecting 50 – 60 people. Can anyone help please?

Thanks

Thanks for the contributions to tonight's edition of What's On. It would be hard for any member to say they don't know what's going on in our Club. I also know when this goes to Facebook on Friday morning, we have another group of followers around neighboring clubs who read with interest what is happening at Dannevirke Golf Club. Keep up the good work folk. .

As always, good golfing to you all.

Our new carts are there to use and be respected. Last Sunday (unknown driver) obviously drove up to another cart on number 14 tee and tried to push it, leaving black tyre marks and holes in the lime track. Just dumb! Appreciate we have visitors and members using our carts, but any such behaviour will be dealt to by the Management Committee. "Use them, don't abuse them" Greenstaff; With Kierane being a fully qualified Green Keeper, the committee and he decided it was a good time to start another Apprentice. The role was advertised before Christmas, and so it is good to welcome Liam Making to our Club. Great to have you on board, and all the best for the next few years, gaining a qualification. Kierane Given the amount of water we now have available, our greens are being well watered. Being softer than normal, please be aware of pitch marks on the Greens. They may not always be yours, but please make a habit of repairing any you see. Thanks That wraps up this week. Have a good weekend, and hopefully the weather is not as bad as predicted. Good Golfing,๐Ÿ‘ Bryan Burt Club Scribe

With approximately 112 mils of rain this month, the course has gone from a dry, plenty of run summer track to a lush green autumn track in a couple of weeks. Plenty of visitors keeping Pat busy, so come on out and enjoy our great course. See you soon. Good Golfing๐Ÿ‘ Bryan Burt Club Scribe
