What's on 24 Feb 2022

Bryan Burt - Club scribe • February 24, 2022

Saturday 26th February; Marae tournament;  There’s still plenty of room in the draw for Saturday so preferably let me know or just turn up on Saturday for a 11am shotgun start. Stephen  PS All the golf club carts are booked for the tournament

Sunday 27th February; Round 1 GHB Pennants 2022; Our 5 teams are all away, Championship 1 @ Hastings, Championship 3 @ Wairoa, Handicap2 Maeranui, Handicap 3 Hastings, Handicap 4 Napier

Saturday 5th March; Club Championships Round 1 Match Play  Draws attached.   There are 15 matches required, to get down to 16 person draws. Next week end it would be great to get as many of those out of the way as possible, plus any first round matches that can proceed.

Seniors;  Great to see so much rain and see the courses getting back to their original green colour. The 5 course classic only 2 weeks away and have only 7 spots left. For those members who which to play please ring me on 0275878424 to enter ,other than that please let me know at Dannevirke on the 1 st March Tuesday. Yes the next get together is on the Tuesday the 1st March at Dannevirke starting at 10.30am it will be great to see a good turn out on a great course. PeterJohnston Club Captain

Sister’s Club; I need to get orders in for the commemorative shirt by Monday. See the example on the board by the door to the men’s locker room. Also keen to get numbers for Patea so I can finalise transport and accommodation. Stephen

Management Committee Meeting 23/2/22;

Miranda;  Subscription notices are due to go our shortly. If you have moved house recently and not notified Miranda, please do so urgently so that you account goes to the correct address. email dannevirkegolf@xtra.co.nz . Members with email address loaded will receive their account via email. Over the next week or two, Membership cards, Bag tags, and programmes for all the AP paying members will be available in the office. President Tony will assist you to get your cards. Ladies, Captain Glenys has yours

New Tractor; the delay with the new tractor is getting rims to hold turf tires. These are currently being built, as they simply could not get them imported. As soon as they are built, the tires will go on and the tractor will be on course.

Carts. Currently we only have 3 carts capable of doing 18 holes. You may remember the batteries were over charged and cooked during the last lock down. New batteries have been ordered, but again Covid has delayed their import. President Tony has inquired, and yes the damage is covered by our insurance.

Trees;  Our contractor is due onsite shortly, and will remove whats required without interfering with the course. In particular, the row between the old walk way to number three on the left of number two green

Open Championship; The term Open Championship has been banded around the clubhouse lately.  The theory being if someone from outside the Senior grade wanted to compete in that Championship grade, it became Open, and qualifying was required. As it was nobody outside the handicaps of 0 - 8 requested to play, so the draw was completed as it has over the past several years, by handicap index. A couple of points here. Can anyone point the Match Committee to the rules of, if there are any regarding this "Open Championship". There is definitely nothing about competitions/ Championships in the Constitution. The honours board and Cup both state Senior Championship. The handbook that ceased around 2006 mentioned Club Championships under the page (Notes on events Men) The 5 grades mentioned here were Senior, intermediate, Intermediate B, Junior and Junior B, again no mention of an Open grade. If you can lay your hands on anything in writing which mentions an Open Championship, the committee would appreciate you assistance.

An early start this year, with GHB Pennants starting this week, and our Championships next week.  With the current system for Championships, of all in unless you advise otherwise, it is great to see 92 names in our Championship draw. Maybe 100 next year, which is a great effort, not seen since last century.

Have a great week end. Good luck and safe traveling if you are playing pennants, and get some practice in before next weeks Champs

Good Golfing

Coring; Kierane and his team had a good run early in the week and got the course open for golfing today. Thanks to our staff and all who helped out. Friday 12th September; (3 options) 1 Our course is open, so weather permitting, there will be golf at Dannevirke 2 Cape Turnagain are hosting the Annual Firms Day. 18 holes 10 am Morning tea, 11 am Tee off. $30 entry fee; 3 Onga Onga, Our very own Jim Hickey (aka Doug) thinks the weather here tomorrow is going to be horrid, but a bit further away from the ranges at Onga Onga, things look better with rain not predicted until later in the day. Anyone wanting to go north, leave from the Mangatera Hotel car park at 10.45 am, Tee off at Onga at 11.30 am. Saturday 13th September; Kitt, Kerr, Hape, Simpson foursomes. Duty Zane, House Johnny. Zane has a copy of the rules for those who are not sure on them. 11.30am tee off Green Staff: There is a rule that states "Greens Staff have the right of way". There is only so many hours in a week, and the staff have lots to do to get everything groomed. If a tractor is heading towards you, please wait for them to get out of your range before hitting your ball. You wouldn't hit a ball at someone walking towards you, so don't do so to someone on a tractor. They can't jump out of the way of an oncoming ball if that were to happen. If a green is being mowed, wave the green staff to carry on; it only takes a few minutes to mow a green. A couple of minutes' delay for your round of golf is nothing compared to consistent stopping and starting for the staff. Common sense should prevail. If in doubt, " Wait, thank you. Spring weather is really upon us at present. Tomorrow looks ugly, but who knows? If you wish to brave the conditions, there are plenty of options this weekend. Good Golfing👍 Bryan Burt Club Scribe

This has been mentioned previously, so make up a pair and come along for an 11.30 am start. Takapau 18 Hole Strokeplay Tournament. Thanks for the support from the 20 members who went through to Takapau last Saturday. We made up close to a quarter of the field, so great support for our friends at Takapau. The gross winner was J McGillicuddy. Pongaroa were the 2025 winners of the Ruahine Rosebowl. That's it for tonight, folks. Have a good weekend. Good Golfing👍 Bryan Burt Club Scribe

A few bits and pieces to mention. Friday 29th August; Course Closed. The course is closed tomorrow for a Master Builders Ambrose Tournament. There is 90-something players in the field starting on multiple tees, so best we keep clear for them . Friday Boys Mid-Day Competition: Doug has suggested playing in Takapau tomorrow. Gather at the Mangatera Hotel car park for an 11 am departure, 11.30 am tee off at Takapau. Saturday 30th August; Takapau 18-hole Stroke play tournament. (Final Ruahine Rosebowl). The draw for this event is attached (click) . Please ignore the numbers down the left side . The top part of the draw is teeing of Dardanelles with the junior field going off Westwood Ho. It looks like a late start but given they have allowed 11-minute gaps, I am sure the field will start quicker than written. I would suggest being early as I can't see 11-minute times being adhered to. For those interested, a van is leaving Drums at 9.15am. Saturday 30th August; At home, Duty Richie House Angela. Seniors, because of the impending visit by Central and Southern to Cape Turnagain on Tuesday, September 2 nd , we will have a full Club day on Thursday, 4 th , complete with raffles, approaches, etc. On the 9 th September, we are unable to play because of coring. We are looking at a visit to Fielding or Eketahuna on that day. We shall advise next week as to where we are going, and see who are interested. Monday 8th September; Coring. The course will be closed until this job is complete. Kierane will advise when the course is reopened Hole In One; Congratulations Jolanda Van Viliet for holing out on number 14 yesterday. Great effort, Jolanda. Plenty happening as we head into spring golf. Good luck to the 22 heading to Takapau on Saturday. Hopefully, this isn't their last Tournament, but that is a matter for the members to sort. Good Golfing👍 Bryan Burt Club Scribe
