Greenwood Cup Result; Report:

November 18th & 19th saw the conclusion of this years Greenwood Cup competition with Rounds 4-7 being played at Hawkes Bay Golf Club in Hastings.

The result from this weekend was possibly the best for many years, as we went through undefeated. Starting Saturday morning, the team pulled off a great 6 to 4 win over Hawkes Golf Club on their own course. In the afternoon we were up against Karamu and came away with an 8 to 2 win.

Sunday morning it was central Hawkes Bay which we defeated 7 to 3. Sunday afternoon was our greatest challenge and on everyone was looking forward too. Dannevirke playing Onga Onga, who at this stage had 6 wins under their belt, and the Greenwood Cup in their hands. They wanted to go right through with 7 wins, and Dannevirke wanted to stop them. While we didn't get a win we halved the match 5 all with them. The last match on the course was two senior players, with Onga going into the hole one up. A win to Dannevirke would give us a 6 to 4 win, and the Country Cup, but sadly this wasn't to be with the players halving the hole, to square the match 5 all.

The end result being that Onga Onga were clear winners of the Greenwood Cup and the Country Cup with 13 match points and 47.5 game wins, in second place Napier with 10 match points and 44.5 game wins. Dannevirke came in third with 9 match points and 39 wins, followed by Hastings,

Maraenui, Hawkes Bay, Central HB, and 8th Karamu. The third place for Dannevirke would be the best overall result for the Club in many years, and one we should all be very proud of.

Individually, our best performer was William Harold with 5 wins and 2 halves to be one of three unbeaten players from the 8 teams. Brad Truesdale was close behind with 5 wins and 1 half.

On behalf of the players, selectors, manager and supporters, our thanks for the support we received from our two sponsors Paul Anderson of DDS,  and President Tony Peeti, and the members who caddied at both Dannevirke and HB Golf Club. Thanks must also go to Clay Lochead, who made the initial approach to myself and Michael, wanting to lift the performance on the Dannevirke team. Sadly we have be known in the past as the social team who played hard, but partied harder. Golf at this level simply does not accommodate that attitude, and so we had buy in from the team to lift our performance.

Our third placing is testament to that attitude, where as in the past finishing 8th was common. This team is youthful, and has some great talent to harness for the next few years.

Team Captains Report;

When our 2023 Greenwood team received our shirts and we stood before our club and sponsors, we talked about what we aspired to and committed to wearing the Dannevirke golf club crest on our chest with pride. I’m delighted to share just how well we backed that commitment up over the two competition weekends.

This team took a big step forward. We worked hard and showed our individual preparation on course. We appreciated the opportunity the club and sponsors provided, our team-mates and opponents. And most of all we did it with a big smile – enjoying the game of golf we love.

By doing these things well its no surprise that we achieved the results we did.

I want to thank our men for that team effort and the Club for providing the opportunity. Roll on 2024 - we will get better and be stronger.

Craig NashShop & Bar; It is becoming an issue for our treasurer trying to balance the shop till against the bar till. We ask members to assist here. Firstly where possible, get cash from a cash machine or business in town before coming to the club. If you do want cash our at the club, please use the EFT-POS machine next to the till, ie Shop EFT-POS for shop till, bar eft-pos for bar till.

Visitors on course;  It is appreciated that not all members have the ability to call out poor behavior on the course to those doing wrong. But please, its not a lot of use complaining to a committee member a week later about a group of unknown persons a week prior. As a member it is your course, they are your carts. If the course or carts are not being respected, politely mention what our expectations are to the offenders. If you see anyone walking around playing the course in gumboots, please let them know its shoes only. It is not acceptable for green fee players or members to be walking on greens in gumboots

A reminder to members, carts are for 2 seated persons only., not three or four as has been seen. Again these carts are there to be hired by members and guests. Abuse of same will not be tolerated. ,

Annual General Meeting;  Monday 4th December 7.30pm in the clubhouse. Annual AGM booklets. These will be available at the clubhouse for collection from Wednesday 29th. As discussed at last nights Committee Meeting, mail is so slow now, that if they were posted next week there is no guarantee they will be received prior to the Meeting. Postage at $2 per item is also a actor in this decision. Any members who cannot make it to the club or the AGM can send a request to Miranda to have one posted to your home address after the AGM Email dannevirkegolf@xtra.co.nz

Committee Nominations; Nomination forms are available upstairs for members to complete. We need people on board to assist in the running the Club, especially the house committee. Genuine signed nominations only please.

Looking forward to playing some golf this weekend. Don't forget the clubhouse draw from 4pm onwards until someone present wins the $300

Good Golfing

Coring; Kierane and his team had a good run early in the week and got the course open for golfing today. Thanks to our staff and all who helped out. Friday 12th September; (3 options) 1 Our course is open, so weather permitting, there will be golf at Dannevirke 2 Cape Turnagain are hosting the Annual Firms Day. 18 holes 10 am Morning tea, 11 am Tee off. $30 entry fee; 3 Onga Onga, Our very own Jim Hickey (aka Doug) thinks the weather here tomorrow is going to be horrid, but a bit further away from the ranges at Onga Onga, things look better with rain not predicted until later in the day. Anyone wanting to go north, leave from the Mangatera Hotel car park at 10.45 am, Tee off at Onga at 11.30 am. Saturday 13th September; Kitt, Kerr, Hape, Simpson foursomes. Duty Zane, House Johnny. Zane has a copy of the rules for those who are not sure on them. 11.30am tee off Green Staff: There is a rule that states "Greens Staff have the right of way". There is only so many hours in a week, and the staff have lots to do to get everything groomed. If a tractor is heading towards you, please wait for them to get out of your range before hitting your ball. You wouldn't hit a ball at someone walking towards you, so don't do so to someone on a tractor. They can't jump out of the way of an oncoming ball if that were to happen. If a green is being mowed, wave the green staff to carry on; it only takes a few minutes to mow a green. A couple of minutes' delay for your round of golf is nothing compared to consistent stopping and starting for the staff. Common sense should prevail. If in doubt, " Wait, thank you. Spring weather is really upon us at present. Tomorrow looks ugly, but who knows? If you wish to brave the conditions, there are plenty of options this weekend. Good Golfing👍 Bryan Burt Club Scribe

Thanks for the support from the 20 members who went through to Takapau last Saturday. We made up close to a quarter of the field, so great support for our friends at Takapau. A few bits and pieces to mention. Friday 29th August; Course Closed. The course is closed tomorrow for a Master Builders Ambrose Tournament. There is 90-something players in the field starting on multiple tees, so best we keep clear for them . Friday Boys Mid-Day Competition: Doug has suggested playing in Takapau tomorrow. Gather at the Mangatera Hotel car park for an 11 am departure, 11.30 am tee off at Takapau. Saturday 30th August; Takapau 18-hole Stroke play tournament. (Final Ruahine Rosebowl). The draw for this event is attached (click) . Please ignore the numbers down the left side . The top part of the draw is teeing of Dardanelles with the junior field going off Westwood Ho. It looks like a late start but given they have allowed 11-minute gaps, I am sure the field will start quicker than written. I would suggest being early as I can't see 11-minute times being adhered to. For those interested, a van is leaving Drums at 9.15am. Saturday 30th August; At home, Duty Richie House Angela. Seniors, because of the impending visit by Central and Southern to Cape Turnagain on Tuesday, September 2 nd , we will have a full Club day on Thursday, 4 th , complete with raffles, approaches, etc. On the 9 th September, we are unable to play because of coring. We are looking at a visit to Fielding or Eketahuna on that day. We shall advise next week as to where we are going, and see who are interested. Monday 8th September; Coring. The course will be closed until this job is complete. Kierane will advise when the course is reopened Hole In One; Congratulations Jolanda Van Viliet for holing out on number 14 yesterday. Great effort, Jolanda. Plenty happening as we head into spring golf. Good luck to the 22 heading to Takapau on Saturday. Hopefully, this isn't their last Tournament, but that is a matter for the members to sort. Good Golfing👍 Bryan Burt Club Scribe
