Coring update; The wet week has made coring difficult. Moving wet sand around on the greens is not easy, so the greens will be difficult on Saturday. Understanding by members is required please.

Thanks Gail for the bacon & egg pie. Much appreciated

Sattrup & Branigan (Four ball best ball) The final was played last weekend, with the victors being Tony Peeti & Peter Drummond, beating Vaughan Hales & Warren Ridge. Believe it or not, all four players shot 84 on Saturday. Tony on a 19 handicap, Drummy on 12, Vaughan on 11 and Ridgy on 15. Subsequent to say Tony and his net 65 or 41 points was what did the damage. Congratulations. TP & Drum

HB Eagles Golfing Society; Halberg Fundraising Tournament; Last Thursday along with fellow Eagles Stephen Prenter, Max Charmley, Warren Ridge, Rod Henricksen and Robin Dailey (positioned on a drinks and raffle hole) plus Gill & Joy Charmley and Ian Mckenzie, we played the annual Halberg Foundation fundraising tournament at Napier Golf Club. A booked full field of 144 minus the odd late scratching, scoring was not all that flash with both the men's groups top scoring with 38 points, ladies I believe was 37. At the dinner following the tournament a cheque was presented to the Halberg Foundation for $20,000, taking the fundraising total for the past 41 years to just over $400,000. With an Application going to Pub Charity and using those funds to purchase prizes from Waipukurau Mitre 10, there was an excellent prize table. The Cape Kidnappers Raffle also generates a substantial amount for this event with Honorary Member Julian Robertson donating four rounds plus carts at the the Cape. Added to this another 20 odd Club from HB and the extended Lower North Island also donated rounds for four. Three of those prizes came to Dannevirke. Stephen Prenter has the vouchers and will present them to the winners in due course. To our members, thankyou for your support with this raffle. We can all be proud of the amount donated to the Hallberg Foundation

Coronation Cup Finals. Saturday 28th Sunday 29th November. This years final was delayed because of Covid 19. Golf HB thanks Dannevirke for making their course available for the finals. There is input required from our Club, so please assist Captain Mike with this. Full support from both the match and House committee is requested. Catering and the bar are our only sources of income, so lets make the most of it. Further details and requests to follow.

Number 7 Tee garden; Thanks to the four ladies who spread the bark around this week. Apparently looks very good. Once the new shrubs get established, it will be a really nice corner to our course. Thanks to everyone who either worked on this project or sponsored plants etc.

From Caleb Shuker & Chris Stuart. Longest day Golf Challenger

We are taking on the Longest Day Golf Challenge for New Zealanders with cancer and would love your help.

Playing as part of a team, we are Caleb Shuker and Chris Stuart

We’re taking on the toughest challenge in golf and attempting to play four rounds in one day to raise money for the Cancer Society. We’ll be spreading the word about our challenge, and of course giving a huge thank you and word of mouth advertisement to the course we have chosen to play the 72 holes on. We would really love to play on your golf course, so we are hoping you will help us get tee times across the day on Saturday the 19th of December

We are personally attempting to do four rounds in one day because we have both lost family members to cancer and it affects most New Zealanders in one way or another.

How can you help?

  1. Kindly let us know you’re happy for us to take on the challenge at Dannevirke golf club. It would really help if you would consider waiving green fees, and opening a little earlier (first light)
  2. Promote the event – we can provide a poster to pin up to let people know that you are making our fundraising for Cancer Society possible. You could also consider writing about the event in any newsletter or on your social media if you have them.

Our fundraising will help the Cancer Society to ensure no New Zealander goes through cancer alone. They provide specialist nurse visits to patients in their home to offer advice on every aspect of life after a cancer diagnosis. They help patients get to their medical treatments and provide accommodation for those undergoing treatment who live far away from their health provider. They also fund world-class research to prevent and treat the symptoms of cancer and the side effects of cancer treatments and medicine.

We want to help support the Cancer Society to do this vital work, so will you be our club when we take on this epic challenge? Please let us know on calebshuker@gmail.com

Thank you and best wishes,

Caleb and Chris

What a brilliant idea, from two of our youngest members. Caleb & Chris played in the Kitt, Kerr, Hape Simpson Foursomes this year, and are both members of our club. You have our full support, so please send me any updates or requests and I will publish them in our weekly What's On

Good Golfing my friends.

Coring; Kierane and his team had a good run early in the week and got the course open for golfing today. Thanks to our staff and all who helped out. Friday 12th September; (3 options) 1 Our course is open, so weather permitting, there will be golf at Dannevirke 2 Cape Turnagain are hosting the Annual Firms Day. 18 holes 10 am Morning tea, 11 am Tee off. $30 entry fee; 3 Onga Onga, Our very own Jim Hickey (aka Doug) thinks the weather here tomorrow is going to be horrid, but a bit further away from the ranges at Onga Onga, things look better with rain not predicted until later in the day. Anyone wanting to go north, leave from the Mangatera Hotel car park at 10.45 am, Tee off at Onga at 11.30 am. Saturday 13th September; Kitt, Kerr, Hape, Simpson foursomes. Duty Zane, House Johnny. Zane has a copy of the rules for those who are not sure on them. 11.30am tee off Green Staff: There is a rule that states "Greens Staff have the right of way". There is only so many hours in a week, and the staff have lots to do to get everything groomed. If a tractor is heading towards you, please wait for them to get out of your range before hitting your ball. You wouldn't hit a ball at someone walking towards you, so don't do so to someone on a tractor. They can't jump out of the way of an oncoming ball if that were to happen. If a green is being mowed, wave the green staff to carry on; it only takes a few minutes to mow a green. A couple of minutes' delay for your round of golf is nothing compared to consistent stopping and starting for the staff. Common sense should prevail. If in doubt, " Wait, thank you. Spring weather is really upon us at present. Tomorrow looks ugly, but who knows? If you wish to brave the conditions, there are plenty of options this weekend. Good Golfing👍 Bryan Burt Club Scribe

Evening all, Saturday 6th September; Card draw at 11.30 am, Duty? House Tony Saturday 13th September; Kitt, Kerr, Hape, Simpson 4somes over 18 holes. This has been mentioned previously, so make up a pair and come along for an 11.30 am start. Takapau 18 Hole Strokeplay Tournament. Thanks for the support from the 20 members who went through to Takapau last Saturday. We made up close to a quarter of the field, so great support for our friends at Takapau. The gross winner was J McGillicuddy. Pongaroa were the 2025 winners of the Ruahine Rosebowl. That's it for tonight, folks. Have a good weekend. Good Golfing👍 Bryan Burt Club Scribe

A few bits and pieces to mention. Friday 29th August; Course Closed. The course is closed tomorrow for a Master Builders Ambrose Tournament. There is 90-something players in the field starting on multiple tees, so best we keep clear for them . Friday Boys Mid-Day Competition: Doug has suggested playing in Takapau tomorrow. Gather at the Mangatera Hotel car park for an 11 am departure, 11.30 am tee off at Takapau. Saturday 30th August; Takapau 18-hole Stroke play tournament. (Final Ruahine Rosebowl). The draw for this event is attached (click) . Please ignore the numbers down the left side . The top part of the draw is teeing of Dardanelles with the junior field going off Westwood Ho. It looks like a late start but given they have allowed 11-minute gaps, I am sure the field will start quicker than written. I would suggest being early as I can't see 11-minute times being adhered to. For those interested, a van is leaving Drums at 9.15am. Saturday 30th August; At home, Duty Richie House Angela. Seniors, because of the impending visit by Central and Southern to Cape Turnagain on Tuesday, September 2 nd , we will have a full Club day on Thursday, 4 th , complete with raffles, approaches, etc. On the 9 th September, we are unable to play because of coring. We are looking at a visit to Fielding or Eketahuna on that day. We shall advise next week as to where we are going, and see who are interested. Monday 8th September; Coring. The course will be closed until this job is complete. Kierane will advise when the course is reopened Hole In One; Congratulations Jolanda Van Viliet for holing out on number 14 yesterday. Great effort, Jolanda. Plenty happening as we head into spring golf. Good luck to the 22 heading to Takapau on Saturday. Hopefully, this isn't their last Tournament, but that is a matter for the members to sort. Good Golfing👍 Bryan Burt Club Scribe
